Chesterfield’s Whittam Cox Architects is expanding, having announced the opening of its new office in Scotland.

Situated in Dundee, this expansion marks a milestone in the practice’s growth strategy and underscores its commitment to delivering architectural services in the region.

The new Scottish office will serve as a hub for the practice’s growing portfolio of projects in Scotland. The initial focus will be on Retail, enabling them to collaborate more closely with both national and local clients and stakeholders.

This strategic move aims to strengthen the company’s footprint in the region, with a particular focus on driving growth in the retail sector, as well as providing further potential to expand into a wider architectural offer to deliver projects in other sectors.

The practice has worked in Scotland for many years with some of the UK’s leading retailers. This office will look to further develop their ability to deliver a range of projects in the country.

Shorts’ Managing Partner Andy Irvine elected to Global Board of Praxity

With affect from 1st January 2025, Shorts’ Managing Partner Andy Irvine has been elected to the Global Governing Council and Board of Praxity – the world’s largest alliance of independent accounting and consulting firms.

Shorts have been members of Praxity since 2018, and in the six years since joining, have forged strong relationships with member firms and extended their reach to businesses worldwide. SMH Group appoints Jonathon Dickens as CEO, James Hartley steps into Chairman role

Chesterfield couple continue business success with launch of new cocktail bar

An entrepreneurial couple are continuing to build on their success in Chesterfield, following the successful launch of a new town centre cocktail bar.

Gavin and Hannah Grainger, who recently relocated the popular Bottle & Thyme restaurant to larger premises on Elder Way, have now opened a new bar on the site of the restaurant’s previous location.

The latest addition to the town, Elder, is a neighbourhood wine and cocktail bar, serving coffee and grilled cheese by day and an extensive wine menu and charcuterie and cheese boards by night.

Speaking about their latest launch, Gavin commented: “Moving Bottle & Thyme over to its new home on Elder Way has been amazing and so well received. The new venue definitely does have more of a city vibe with it’s big, open, airy space but we also wanted to keep the small, intimate nature of our old venue and offer something a little different to Bottle & Thyme.

“Elder is a grown-up, sophisticated place to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of life and enjoy the finest things in life; good coffee, wine and cheese. We wanted to bring something to our town that isn’t currently on offer and feel Elder achieves this with its offering.

“Having both been raised in Chesterfield and currently bringing our own two boys up in the town, we are really passionate about developing the area and creating special places for people to share and enjoy. Chesterfield Champions collaborate to secure purchase of key town centre property

Commercial interior design and build specialists We Are Spaces Ltd has announced the acquisition of 85 New Square in Chesterfield, further strengthening the company’s portfolio of landmark properties in the town.

The 16,000 sq ft building, which has been vacant for over a year having formerly served as the Revenues Office and Council Customer Service Centre, is located in the heart of Chesterfield’s conservation area.

The property was purchased from Chesterfield Borough Council following a competitive tendering process, with legal guidance provided by the commercial property team at Banner Jones Solicitors.

Overlooking the historic gardens and surrounded by a mix of commercial, residential, and leisure properties, the site is poised to play a pivotal role in the ongoing regeneration of the town centre.

Plans for the property include a substantial transformation to create a modern, high-quality workspace offering. As part of their vision, We Are Spaces Ltd will preserve the character of the building while incorporating contemporary design features and state-of-the-art sustainability measures.

The refurbishment will involve removing outdated ceiling structures to expose unique architectural details, such as apex beams, creating an open and inviting environment that meets the growing demand for premium office spaces.

£1 million boost for regeneration project near Chesterfield

North East Derbyshire District Council’s The Avenue regeneration project is to receive up to £1m thanks to funding secured from the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA), which sees the project as an important part of building new and affordable homes and regeneration of brownfield land.

The project, located in Wingerworth, aims to transform a former industrial site into a vibrant mixed-use development with over 100 affordable homes to be built on brownfield land.

The Avenue, a nationally recognised brownfield regeneration project, has already seen significant investment, transforming the area from one of Europe’s most polluted sites into a nature reserve and mixed-use development.

The Council has been working with partners EMCCA, Homes England and Derbyshire County Council to deliver the project.

A key challenge has been finding a viable solution for the Mill Lane junction, off the A61 Derby Road, which provides access to the southern part of the site.

The Council commissioned a study by WSP UK Ltd. that recommended a signalised junction as a more cost-effective and technically sound solution. This alternative, supported by Derbyshire County Council, eliminates the need for third-party land acquisition and unlocks the Taylor Wimpey development.

The funding will be used to provide access to the site, unlocking its potential and completion of the southern access part of The Avenue project will bring many benefits to the district, including:

  • Economic benefits: construction jobs, increased local spending and investment attraction.
  • Environmental benefits: brownfield redevelopment, improved green spaces and sustainable design.
  • Housing benefits: delivery of approximately 363 new homes, including 120 affordable units.
  • Infrastructure improvements: upgraded roads, new utilities and a new school site.
  • Biodiversity net gain: creation of new habitats.

North East Derbyshire District Council Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Cllr Jayne Barry said, “We are delighted to receive this funding to help unlock the potential of this site.

“This was one of the most polluted sites in Europe and I am proud of the work that we have done to regenerate the site which is now home to new properties and this funding will help deliver over 100 affordable homes, new infrastructure, jobs, economic growth and more for North East Derbyshire.”

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward said: “The Avenue at Wingerworth is an ambitious project – one we want to support. It’s transformation from a polluted unused area into a mixed-use site has been great. They are bringing the community and nature back into that space.

“This funding will go towards supporting the project so they can expand further and have more development opportunities in the future.

“Sites like The Avenue are vital for boosting both the local and regional economy, so we want to support the work they are already achieving here in North East Derbyshire by investing in the project.”

Chesterfield Businesses empowering future talent through mentorship and collaboration

Chesterfield businesses are actively driving forward the next generation of talent in our town, by bridging the gap between education and industry.

From construction and manufacturing to professional services, local firms are working closely with schools, colleges, and the wider community to inspire young people and provide clear pathways to skilled and rewarding careers.

A recent Round Table event, hosted by Destination Chesterfield in collaboration with the Derbyshire Times, brought together industry leaders from Chesterfield’s thriving property and construction sector. The discussion revealed how mentorship and innovative training programs are reshaping perceptions of these industries and addressing the skills gap.

Philip Dalton, owner of Dalton Roofing, outlined his company’s proactive steps in workforce development. “We’ve got seven apprentices who currently train at Leeds College of Building. However, we’re working on a plan with Chesterfield College to bring roofing training here,” he explained. Philip emphasised the importance of exposure and hands-on experience for young people, particularly those who may have struggled academically.

“There are young people who didn’t get their maths or English at school, and we’re trying to showcase what a good career move roofing can be. We’re offering work experience, training days, taster sessions, and T Levels to give them that first look into the industry.”

Heather Williams, Strategic Business Consultant at Ovo Spaces echoed the sentiment, highlighting the growing alignment between education providers and businesses. “Chesterfield College and the University of Derby are singing from the same hymn sheet, asking, ‘Where is the talent?’ and ‘What standards does the private sector need?’” she said. “These conversations ensure young people leave education ready to integrate into the workforce.”

One challenge repeatedly highlighted was the perception of construction and similar industries. Amy Revell, Director of We Are Spaces shared her thoughts on this issue: “There’s always been a gap in the construction sector. People tend to focus on trades, but the industry is so much more. If you start as a bricklayer, it doesn’t mean you’re stuck – you can move into managerial roles or other professional areas. The opportunities are vast.”

Nick Fenton, Associate Director at Whittam Cox Architects elaborated on how mentorship and training can broaden career horizons. “All it takes is that little bit of engagement early on. People from all industries going into schools and sharing insights – not just with pupils but with teachers as well – makes a big difference. I’ve seen the enthusiasm when students are given a simple design challenge. It helps them understand what a career in architecture could look like.”

Currently, businesses in Chesterfield’s Property and Construction Group are visiting schools via a collaborative initiative called ‘Careers Made in Chesterfield.’ In its first year the scheme, which sees representatives in the sector visiting schools, hosted eight workshops for 275 young people and provided work experience placements for almost 30 students.

Lee Barnes, Managing Director of Inspire Design and Development Ltd. believes the engagement has the potential to make a massive impact: “I’ve worked with schools throughout North East Derbyshire to engage kids who were struggling with the educational process. Every single one of those kids ended up with an apprenticeship in construction. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how just a bit of encouragement and guidance can change lives.”

Apprenticeships emerged as a cornerstone of Chesterfield’s strategy for workforce development. Businesses highlighted their value in providing a cost-effective alternative to traditional education routes while equipping young people with practical skills.

“We use apprenticeships extensively,” Barnes explained. “They’re not just for trades – they’re also a route into professional roles like architecture. Apprenticeships allow you to gain qualifications and experience without the debt associated with university degrees.”

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, celebrated Chesterfield’s forward-thinking approach: “We were the first town to declare ourselves an ‘Apprentice Town.’ That designation has increased awareness of higher-level apprenticeships and introduced apprentice ambassadors who share their stories with young people.”

Nick Fenton pointed to the benefits of combining work with study. “When I trained, I attended university full-time. Now, our students work while studying one day a week. This approach helps them develop not only academic skills but also the soft skills needed in the workplace, creating more well-rounded professionals,” he said.

The Construction Skills Hub recently launched in Staveley, one of only two in the UK, was highlighted as a pivotal initiative. Lee Barnes called it “an absolutely fantastic resource” for the town. “It’s helping businesses and individuals alike by creating a long-term plan to address the skills shortage,” he said.

Heather Williams emphasised the Hub’s potential to drive change. “The data we’ll gather over the next 5–10 years will show its success in equipping young people with the skills they need. It’s a long-term investment, but it’s going to make a significant impact.”

Another program making waves is the Manufacturing Futures Programme. Introducing the scheme which was launched in November, Councillor Gilby explained, “This initiative will bring businesses into a classroom to learn how to become mentors for apprentices in their own organisations. It’s another example of how Chesterfield is leading the way in preparing young people for the world of work.”

While construction and manufacturing remain central to Chesterfield’s economy, the digital sector is also growing rapidly. Amy Revell noted the importance of engaging young people interested in fields like AI and digital technology. “These skills are in high demand across all industries. It’s about putting the opportunities in front of them and getting the message right. Social media can be a powerful tool for reaching a larger audience and inspiring young people,” she said.

Ian Bates, Policy and Representation Manager at East Midlands Chamber, added: “We need to highlight the variety of roles within sectors like construction. It’s not just about trades – there’s planning, building information modelling, and other cutting-edge areas. These roles can be incredibly rewarding, both professionally and financially.”

The Round Table underscored the importance of collaboration between businesses, education providers, and the community. “The more contact young people have with employers while they’re still in school, the more likely they are to find a job after graduation,” Councillor Gilby observed.

Heather Williams stressed the importance of transparency and teamwork: “When businesses and educators work together, it makes careers feel more attainable. Instead of hearing about roles from teachers, students hear directly from professionals in the industry.”

Amy Revell highlighted the adaptability required in smaller businesses: “We’re a growing company, and we need people who can wear multiple hats. A lot of these skills aren’t taught – they’re learned on the job. That’s why mentorship and collaboration are so important.”

Ultimately, Chesterfield’s businesses, educators, and local leaders are united in their mission to inspire the town’s youth and ensure its economic vitality. The collective effort is paying dividends, not just in filling immediate skills gaps but in shaping a brighter future for Chesterfield.

As Nick Fenton summed up: “Engagement early on makes a huge difference. By connecting with schools and setting small tasks, we make careers in industries like architecture feel attainable and exciting. The next generation of professionals is out there – we just need to show them the way.”

‘2025 will be transformative for Chesterfield’

Destination Chesterfield Board Member, Ann Fomukong-Boden looks ahead to an exciting new year for our town.


2025 will be a transformative year for Chesterfield, and I’m filled with anticipation and optimism about the progress we’re about to see.

The town centre is evolving, ensuring it becomes a place we want to spend our leisure time, not just a necessary stop on the to-do list. I love the surprise of spotting further progress each week to our historic outdoor market. Its makeover combines new and old perfectly with our town’s pump now displayed in full glory.

Improved facilities will encourage a more diverse range of traders, and I keep picturing myself strolling across our high street. With the aroma of fresh baked goods and sizzling street food filling the air, how could you resist stopping for a snack?! New Square will also become a hub of activity, hosting vibrant events and entertainment.

Our town’s museum and the Pomegranate Theatre’s transformation move closer to completion. Picture yourself sipping a steaming latte in the new café bar; its inviting ambience makes it ideal for catching up with friends. An expanded theatre will host bigger and better concerts and performances. Meanwhile, the reconfigured museum will offer hands-on exhibits, with improved technology inviting visitors to touch, explore, and engage with our rich history.

Just a short ride on the bus or stroll along our beautiful canal, and you’ll arrive in Staveley town centre – a destination also undergoing a transformation. Your youngsters will love exploring new outdoor play areas.

Personally, I recommend taking the canal towpath for the most tranquil experience. Already one of Derbyshire’s most beautiful walking and cycling spots, the canal will be enhanced with restored paths and cycleways, inviting outdoor enthusiasts to take in the vivid greenery. In October, the Trans Pennine Bridge was installed at Staveley, a key part of the full project, which will restore the Canal across the Doe Lea Valley to Renishaw, giving you plenty of space to explore.

If Santa bought you a new calendar for Christmas, then definitely make the most of it by pencilling our town’s upcoming event highlights!

Major milestone in plans for rail innovation centre in Barrow Hill

Plans to create a modern rail innovation and training centre in Barrow Hill, Staveley – which will create jobs and skills opportunities for local people, and bolster Chesterfield’s ambitions to be a leading destination for the rail sector – have reached a major milestone.

Proposals to create the Derbyshire Rail Industry Innovation Vehicle (DRIIVe) next to the historic Barrow Hill Roundhouse are pressing ahead after Chesterfield Borough Council appointed a contractor to lead the scheme.

It follows consideration of a report at meetings of Cabinet and Full Council last week which agreed the final elements of the funding package required to support the delivery of the project, and to appoint Stepnell Ltd as the contractor to lead the work.

The plans have been drawn up as part of the multi-million-pound Staveley Town Deal and will see the creation of a new facility providing specialist rail industry training, research and development facilities, and commercial space for rail-related businesses.

Work on site is expected to start in early 2025.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and vice chair of the Staveley Town Deal Board, said: “This is a really exciting, landmark project that will create new opportunities for local people to access high-quality skills and jobs, while bolstering Chesterfield’s position as a leading destination for future innovation and investment in the rail sector.

“The DRIIVe project will also play a key role in the emerging East Midlands Investment Zone (EMIZ) with its focus on advanced manufacturing and green technology industries, by attracting the rail sector and associated supply chain to the nearby Chesterfield EMIZ sites.

“It’s great to see the project continue to gather pace, and we look forward to working with the contractor, and our partners, to progress construction of DRIIVe early next year. The facility will be completed by the end of 2025.”

Tom Sewell, regional director at Stepnell, said: “The DRIIVe project adds to our public sector expertise of infrastructure and education projects, and will enhance our partnership with Chesterfield Borough Council as part of the Staveley Town Deal. Through committing to delivering early community engagement in the project, the specialist facility will be built to the highest standards of railway training and have an important impact on developing talent in STEM in the region.”

The project will see the creation of 22 job opportunities for local people and a hub from which to increase awareness of rail-related career opportunities, developing STEM skills required to access the industry through a community outreach programme that will support 1000 individuals each year.

Ivan Fomin, Chair of the Staveley Town Deal, said: “This is a scheme delivered locally but of national significance, which will open the door to new, high-quality skills and career opportunities for people in Staveley – something which is right at the heart of what we are aspiring to achieve as part the Town Deal programme.

“It’s the latest positive news for Staveley, with our Town Deal projects really gathering pace, and almost all now being delivered on site. This is a fantastic achievement involving lots of different partners, and people will soon start to see the impact of these projects in their communities. Staveley will truly be a place to start, stay and grow.”

The DRIIVe project is being delivered by Chesterfield Borough Council in collaboration with the University of Derby, Chesterfield College and Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society.

Mervyn Allcock, Manager of the Barrow Hill Roundhouse and Staveley Town Deal Board member, said: “This is a project of national significance for the Rail sector, and we are so proud to be creating this fantastic facility here at Barrow Hill. The siting of these state-of-the-art innovation and research facilities right next to this amazing venue of international significance will greatly benefit the area and improve the quality of life of local people.”

DRIIVe will include classroom and workshop training areas, specialist research and development facilities including a digital laboratory, and commercial offices.

The centre will support a network of specialist training providers – offering rail-related education from level two through to postgraduate training and research.

Becoming a prominent location for rail technology, DRIIVe will also serve as a base for rail-related supply chain businesses which will have access to the very latest research and innovation.

Funding for the project is mostly being provided through the Staveley Town Deal – the Staveley area was one of 101 towns across England invited to submit an investment plan to the Government’s Towns Fund and received £25.2 million.

Multiple award wins for Chesterfield’s Superior Wellness

Chesterfield-based manufacturer, Superior Wellness is celebrating after winning multiple awards at this year’s UK Pool & Spa Awards.

The UK Pool & Spa Awards has earned itself a reputation as one of the water leisure industry’s most valuable marketing tools. Founded in 2010, the UK Pool & Spa Awards is a competition that is open to all companies involved in the delivery of water leisure.

Competition categories cover wet leisure manufacturers, pool and spa wholesalers, retailers, leisure operators across residential and commercial swimming pools, hot tub and swim spas, wellness and other accessories.

The world’s fastest growing hot tub manufacturer Superior Wellness were successful in winning several awards at the prestigious event held on 5th December 2024 in Birmingham.

Superior Wellness won the following awards:

  • Spa Team of the Year – Superior Wellness (Winner)
  • Special Achievement Award – Team of the Year (Winner)
  • Marketing Initiative of the Year (Spa) – Chill Tubs Collaborations (Winner)

And Gold and Silver Awards in the following categories:

  • Spa Product of the Year – Seville Hot Tub, Platinum Spas (Silver Award)

Showcasing the very best examples of pool and spa design from across the country, entrants were awarded silver or gold standard in the competition covering both home and public pool and spa facilities in a contest that attracted thousands of on-line votes and votes from judges, before being scrutinised by an independent jury.

A Christmas to celebrate at Robinson Paperbox

Robinson Paperbox Packaging is celebrating its most successful Christmas production run, just over a year after their entire facility was almost destroyed in the town’s mass flood.

Thanks to the fantastic efforts of their whole team, the factory is now completely restored. The SATE and Emmeci machines are back in full production with increased capacity for new and existing orders to take them into 2025.

Christmas clients include Wentworth Wooden Puzzles, Betty’s Bakery, Biscuiteers Baking Co, Neom Wellbeing and Holdsworth’s premium chocolate range. This year Wentworth have created a beautiful bespoke range of advent calendars for the festive season with challenging designs and innovative packaging solutions.

Robinson are also involved in several projects for Betty’s in both confectionery and bakery-based products, recently producing the newly launched chocolates and truffles range which includes the Cru Savage Truffles, Champagne Truffles and Salted Caramel Chocolates. They have also recently manufactured the Betty’s Chocolate Tasting Box with its brand-new look, their famous Florentines, Fruit Clusters and Chocolate Desires, and their Langues de Chat chocolates boxes which are a festive favourite.

Shorts ready for growth with appointment of new Tax Partner

Shorts are delighted to announce the appointment of Craig Walker as Tax Partner with effect from 1 December 2024, joining existing Tax Partners Chris Chambers, Scott Burkinshaw, and David Robinson in leading the firm’s tax offering. Responding to a decade of sustained growth, the appointment of Shorts’ fourth Tax Partner supports their continued commitment to growing the Tax department and underpins the firm’s continued development and strength.

An experienced Chartered Tax Adviser and member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, Craig has over 20 years of tax experience at large regional firms and a top 15 firm, and he rejoins Shorts twelve years after previously completing his early tax training at the firm.

An enthusiastic advocate for his hometown of Chesterfield, Craig will be based out of the firm’s offices at Ashgate Road and will advise clients on all areas of UK taxation with a particular focus on Private Client work. Going forward, his role will transition progressively towards taking a more active role in the leadership and strategy of the firm, in particular within the Private Client team as Chris Chambers moves towards retirement.

Superior Wellness Appoints Steve Noel to Lead US Expansion

Superior Wellness is pleased to announce the appointment of Steve Noel as the new US General Manager, a strategic role designed to lead the company’s expansion efforts in the United States. With more than 20 years of experience in operations and distribution, Steve brings an impressive background to Superior Wellness, enhancing the company’s capability to deliver on its growth plans.

Steve previously held key roles in distribution and operations, including as Senior Operation Manager at Target Corp., where he managed operations across over 100 Target stores in the Southeast. Additionally, he spent seven years with Sleep Number Inc., overseeing essential functions in manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution. This extensive experience equips him well for his new role at Superior Wellness, where he will be instrumental in establishing and leading the Cameron, South Carolina facility.

Steve expressed his excitement about joining the Superior Wellness team, stating, “I could not be prouder or more excited to join the Superior Wellness team, especially as part of launching the Cameron, South Carolina facility. I’m thrilled to help build something sustainable here in the States that will drive the company’s growth for years to come.
