Chesterfield business owner highly commended as Female Entrepreneur of the Year

A Chesterfield entrepreneur has been presented with a ‘highly commended’ award at a ceremony which celebrates female business leaders.

Last month, local design agency Crush’s Founder and Creative Director, Natalie Burkinshaw, attended 2024’s prestigious Novi Awards, having been shortlisted as a finalist for Female Entrepreneur of the Year.

As an awards programme dedicated to ‘championing female business leaders who are breaking barriers across the business world’, being recognised by the Novi Awards has been especially significant for Natalie and the Crush team.

A female-owned and founded design agency, in an industry where 97% of creative directors are male, Crush has been working on branding, design and website projects for over two decades from their Chesterfield-based studio.

Having already been over the moon to have been shortlisted in the first place, Natalie came away from this year’s Novi Awards with a special prize of Highly Commended, just missing out on top spot.

The judges noted her 20 plus years of business leadership and innovation within the design sector as a significant achievement that they felt shouldn’t go unnoticed, along with her charitable activities outside of the workplace.

Since the beginning, Natalie has led Crush to be an agency that provides businesses – both local to Chesterfield and across the UK (and indeed globe) – with an honest and relationship-led approach to their creative projects. Whether it be a corporate brand development for engineering superpowers like Briggs of Burton and Ziemann Holvrieka, a website build for the famous Ministry of Sound, or even a pro-bono rebrand for The Clothing Bank charity, Crush dedicates itself to helping organisations thrive.

Natalie commented: “I am blown away with winning this accolade from Novi. The awards day was absolutely energising, an experience like no other for female business leaders. I had the privilege of meeting some awe-inspiring women who came from every walk of life. ”

Crush supports the marketing and economic growth of the town through Chesterfield Champions, a network of over 200 organisations across Chesterfield and North Derbyshire.

New Chesterfield Canal Bridge officially opens

A 38m long bridge on the Trans Pennine Trail in Staveley has now been formally opened.

The ribbon was cut by Ivan Fomin, Managing Director of MSE Hiller and Chair of the Staveley Town Deal Board.

A group of children from Hollingwood Primary School were the first to ride across to great applause from about 40 guests representing all the organisations involved in bringing the project to fruition.

After posing for photographs, they rode back accompanied by Ivan Fomin and Toby Perkins MP, who were on electric bikes provided by Wheels to Work, another Town Deal project to provide travel support to help residents over the age of 16 get to work, training or college.

Before the official ceremony, a horse and its rider crossed the bridge to represent the British Horse Society and promote the multi-user route.

The bridge is the first phase of a £6 million restoration scheme managed by the Chesterfield Canal Trust. Most of the money will come from the Staveley Town Deal, a £25.2 million investment in Staveley through the Government’s Towns Fund, covering nine projects in all.

Children from Hollingwood Primary School with their headteacher, Mr Chris Stewart, Toby Perkins MP and Ivan Fomin

Next year will see a new lock, a new bridge, a pumping system, about 400m of restored canal, lots of landscaping and planting works and 3km of upgraded towpath to the borough boundary. Hundreds of thousands of tons of clay will also be placed on the line of the historic Staveley Puddlebank ready for full restoration in the future.

Peter Hardy, Chair of the Chesterfield Canal Trust, thanked all those who had helped with the project. These included Chesterfield Borough Council, who manage the Staveley Town Deal, Derbyshire County Council, who are adopting the new bridge, O’Brien Contractors Ltd., who did the construction work, and Suon Ltd., who donated the clay. He also thanked the Trans Pennine Trail, Cycle Chesterfield and the British Horse Society all of whom gave valuable advice and support plus George Rogers and Jon Lindley, who manage the project for the Trust.

Cllr Steve Lismore, Chesterfield Borough Council Cabinet member for Health and Wellbeing, said “The Staveley Town Deal has four strands – Innovation and Enterprise, Inclusive Growth, Place, and Health and Wellbeing – and this project is close to my heart sitting very firmly in the last category. Walking and access to the countryside have proven benefits for both physical and mental health, and this project will encourage people to explore the area much more. It will be wonderful for the people of Staveley and the wider community. Many partners have come together to make this happen and I am very grateful for all their hard work.”

Cllr Carolyn Renwick, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Environment, said “We’re committed to promoting safe and sustainable ways to travel, be they for work or leisure, and this is a very welcome development after a lot of hard work and collaboration. Thanks are due especially to the staff and volunteers at the Chesterfield Canal Trust.

“The new bridge helps improve the Trans Pennine Trail which reflects our support for increasing and improving walking, cycling and horse-riding opportunities across the county.”

Before cutting the ribbon, Ivan Fomin echoed the previous two speakers by thanking the volunteers of the Chesterfield Canal Trust for all the work they do which is of an incredibly high standard.

As 2024 comes to a close, Chesterfield is reflecting on another productive year for the town.

The last 12 months has seen work progress on the transformation of our town centres in Chesterfield and Staveley, the restoration of our historic canal, and the Markham Vale scheme which celebrated it’s 20th anniversary.

Another huge boost was the confirmation of the £160m East Midlands Investment Zone scheme, which will support advanced manufacturing and green industries, including at the former Hartington Colliery site.

With further ambitions for growth in 2025, the town’s network of Chesterfield Champions have shared with us their biggest successes from the past 12 months.

Chesterfield rail passengers benefit from shorter Sunday journey times to London

A new intercity timetable providing faster Sunday services has been put into place, saving Chesterfield passengers up to 20 minutes on their journey time to London St. Pancras.

East Midlands Railway (EMR) is now offering significantly improved Sunday Intercity journey times as part of its December timetable change.

Changes to the timetable will also mean passengers travelling to Chesterfield from London will save up to 27 minutes on their journey.

The enhancements, which are made possible by working in collaboration with Network Rail, will require the closure of tracks for maintenance and will result in the removal of two early Sunday morning services. This will give Network Rail more time to carry out maintenance work and ensure trains run safely and reliably.

Will Rogers, Managing Director at East Midlands Railway, said: “This is great news for customers who use our Intercity services on Sundays.

“In addition to speeding up 12 journeys, which will encourage more people to travel by rail, the changes will also enable critical track maintenance work and deliver annual savings to the taxpayer—balancing the need for long-term infrastructure improvements with passenger experience.”

Mark Budden, Route Director for Network Rail in the East Midlands, added: “Like all things, the railway needs to be maintained and improved, and the majority of this work needs to be carried out when trains are not running to keep everyone safe.

“These changes to the timetable are a real testament to the work between EMR and Network Rail. As well as faster journeys, it should also mean more reliable services because Network Rail teams will have more time to carry out maintenance on a crucial part of the line.”

Chesterfield businesses encouraged to explore free business support to improve energy efficiency

Businesses in Chesterfield are being encouraged to take advantage of the fully funded business support on offer to help them improve energy efficiency and save costs.

To date, nearly 1,200 businesses have attended the Accelerator project’s energy efficiency and carbon reduction events and training courses, with 146 accessing the Premises Energy Audit consultancy service and 132 developing decarbonisation plans.

The project, delivered by East Midlands Chamber on behalf of participating local authorities, is funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). It offers businesses:

  • Premises Energy audits designed to help identify energy efficiency improvements and opportunities to reduce costs. Audits typically involve a one-to-three-day site visit (depending on the size or complexity of the business) to review energy usage assets and gas/electric consumption pattern (as well as fuel consumption for businesses with a large fleet of vehicles). Findings are collated into an energy savings report which not only helps reduce energy wastage but is useful supporting evidence for grant applications.
  • £2,000 Growth vouchers towards the cost of specialist consultancy or bespoke training supporting the adoption of energy efficient practices that lead towards the development or implementation of a decarbonisation plan.
  • Training, both in-person and online, to help businesses gain green business skills and plan their journey towards carbon neutrality, including the one-day certified course on Carbon Literacy taking place on Tuesday, 21st January.
  • Energy reduction workshops at Toyota Motor Manufacturing offering practical demonstration and shop floor observations with Toyota’s energy specialists, the next of which takes place on Thursday, 13th February.
  • Access to online sustainability platform Zellar to help showcase the real-time environmental impact of activities and to produce a decarbonisation plan.

East Midlands Chamber Deputy Chief Executive Diane Beresford said: “The environmental benefits of reducing your carbon footprint are well documented but there are much wider advantages for your business. It helps you become legislation compliant, supports your procurement and tendering processes, builds resilience and, of course, reduces costs.

“From bite-sized webinars to accredited training, premises energy audits and consultancy funding, the Accelerator project is helping businesses in very practical ways to save costs and energy and become greener and more resilient. For any business that has yet to take advantage of the Accelerator project, I would urge them to do so before the project ends in March.”

Businesses interested in signing up for support can do so by completing the relevant Expression of Interest form at: www.emc-dnl.co.uk/accelerator.

Companies in Chesterfield can access a range of support services, from growth and innovation advice, to help in finding talent and upskilling your workforce. Find out more at: https://www.chesterfield.co.uk/business/business-support/

Staveley Market regeneration begins

The multi-million pound regeneration of Staveley Market has started on site, with an official groundbreaking ceremony to mark the milestone.

Chesterfield Borough Council’s Staveley 21 project, funded through the Staveley Town Deal, includes the construction of a new landmark building in the town centre, improvements to the market square and rejuvenation of the high street. Together the works will help support local businesses by creating a more attractive, welcoming and safe town centre for everyone to enjoy.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “It is fantastic to get this project underway as it will transform Staveley town centre and enhance it for visitors, businesses and residents.

“It will expand what the town centre has to offer – creating new opportunities for events and social spaces but also encourage more people to visit to support both existing retailers and market traders.

“This is an exciting and ambitious project that forms a key part of the Staveley Town Deal programme, and we look forward to seeing progress over the coming months.”

The council’s construction partner, Stepnell, will be leading the programme of work on site, which has begun with the removal of the disused toilet block on the market square.

Tom Sewell, regional director at Stepnell, said: “As we commence works on Staveley 21, early engagement and continued close collaboration with Chesterfield Borough Council, partners and community – including Staveley Junior School – has put works in a strong position. Our team is committed to delivering a rejuvenated public space, which will serve the future of a more attractive Staveley town centre.”

Next year a new landmark building will be built to form a new focal point for the town centre. Once completed the building will house Derbyshire County Council’s Staveley Library on the ground floor and the upstairs will provide space for new businesses.  The building will include grade-A office accommodation with sustainable features and accessible entry, the space will be available on competitive terms.  To find out more about this opportunity and register your interest please contact Chesterfield Borough Council’s Economic Development Team on 01246 345255 or by emailing economic.development@chesterfield.gov.uk.

Staveley 21 also includes the transformation of the marketplace to create an enlarged public space to support existing uses such as Staveley Town Council’s regular markets but also as a setting that can be used to host a wide range of new events to encourage more people to visit the town centre.

Proposals include new tiered outdoor seating to support outdoor theatre and performances, and natural play equipment to help make the marketplace more attractive to families.

Designs for the play equipment have been developed in collaboration with pupils from Staveley Junior School, who visited the site with Stepnell and took part in a workshop to discuss what kind of equipment they would like to see installed.

New paving, lighting, street furniture and planting will help create an enhanced atmosphere and visitor experience through the day and night whilst new signage will help connect the town centre with Staveley’s other visitor attractions including the Chesterfield Canal and Staveley Hall.

Around £5 million of funding has been provided through the Staveley Town Deal – a £25.2 million programme that aims to ensure Staveley is a place to start, stay and grow.

Ivan Fomin, chair of the Staveley Town Deal, said: “This is an exciting project for Staveley that will help the town centre to attract additional visitors and support local businesses.

Almost all of our Town Deal projects are now being delivered on site. This is a fantastic achievement across all partners, and people will soon start to see the impact of all these projects in their community.”

Chesterfield Champions get into the festive spirit

Businesses in our town’s network of Chesterfield Champions have been busy getting into the festive spirit, with several initiatives to support our people and communities.

Chesterfield FC spreads festive cheer at Ashgate Hospice

Ashgate Hospice - Chesterfield FC Visiting

The players from Chesterfield Football Club brought plenty of smiles and Christmas cheer to Ashgate Hospice on Thursday 5 December, during their much-loved annual visit.

The day began in the hospice’s Day Services area, where players joined patients for festive arts and crafts, including Christmas card making. They also took part in a light-hearted debate about the best chocolates in a Celebrations box – with the Spireites unanimously agreeing that Bounty is not a fan favourite!

Next, the team visited Ashgate’s specialist Inpatient Unit to spend time with patients, chatting and sharing stories with them during the visit. One special visitor, Daisy the Poodle Shih Tzu, was especially delighted with all the attention from the players.

Before finishing their visit, the players took a tour of Ashgate’s newly renovated Day Services area, set to reopen early next year. The updated space will provide enhanced support for people living with life-limiting and incurable illnesses and the people important to them.

Spireites captain Jamie Grimes said: “It’s been a couple of years I’ve been here and it’s great to see all of the new facilities going in and all of the money that has been donated by local companies.

“It’s really eye-opening to see how kind people can be and the kind work that everyone does here. People seem so comfortable and as happy as they can be in their situation.

“It’s nice to have a joke, bring a smile to a face and hopefully take their mind off of what they are going through.

“It’s not nice to see people struggling but it gives you a bit of perspective with football and makes you appreciate what you have got.

“It’s been my third year coming now [to Ashgate Hospice] and I keep seeing the place get better and that is important thanks to the donations that they get.

“I can only commend the people and the countless companies that have donated to the new facility and it’s a credit to the amazing work that people do here and the amazing kindness and generosity of the people in the community.”

To make the day even more magical, the club brought Christmas sacks filled with chocolates and biscuits to share with patients and staff.

Ali Ward-Foster, Partnerships Manager at Ashgate Hospice, shared: “We’re so grateful to Chesterfield FC for visiting us each Christmas. It’s such a special day, and the joy they bring to our patients, those important to them, and our staff and volunteers is just incredible.

“Watching them take the time to chat and laugh with everyone is heartwarming—it’s a reminder of how amazing our community is when we come together.”

Right now, Ashgate is only able to operate 15 out of its 21 inpatient beds. As a result, not all patients who require hospice care are able to access it, meaning some families are missing out on the essential support and special moments that hospices offer, especially during the festive period.

To support Ashgate this Christmas and help ensure more people can access vital care, please visit www.ashgatehospice.org.uk/christmas-appeal or by calling 01246 567 250.

Bolsover shines bright with light show and lantern parade

Lantern parade

Junction Arts brought two illuminating events to Bolsover; Bright Winter Nights at Bolsover Castle and the Bolsover Lantern Parade, which celebrated its 30th birthday.

On Friday, the 29th of November, Bright Winter Nights saw over a thousand people flock to the immersive light show at Bolsover Castle. The sell-out event included three art installations that were co-created with the community and professional artists. Know Your Neighbourhood in the old riding school saw Bolsover District residents’ artwork come to life in a film created by national artist William Lindley and projected onto the stable walls.

Mirror, Mirror, created by Derbyshire theatre company, Babbling Vagabonds and projection artists Illuminos, featured the work of students from Bolsover School. It was an interactive piece, with visitors using mirrors to find characters and become part of the artwork.

In Full Colour, a digital projection onto the Little Castle was the event’s centrepiece. Projection artist Rebecca Smith worked with youth members of Derbyshire LGBT+, which includes LGBTQIA+ young people from around Chesterfield, to create an inspiring immersive experience that combined history with contemporary digital art.
Local resident Michelle Ward said: “It was amazing, we really enjoyed it. I think William Cavendish would have approved as it was his party palace and he liked to show it off.”

On Saturday, hundreds of people joined the Bolsover Lantern Parade with their lanterns and thousands more lined the streets to see one of the UK’s biggest and longest-running light processions.

Following a month of lantern-making workshops in the community and local schools, just under 600 lanterns were made for the parade, with 400 taking part on the night. Among the hundreds of creations, there was a giant Stitch, a beautiful turtle, a rocket, a jellyfish, a car, a sausage dog, lots of Christmas trees and two huge dragons!

The parade marked the finale of the Bolsover Winter Festival, a weekend of festive fun, which includes a traditional Christmas market and a day of festive food and entertainment in the town centre.

Chesterfield-based charity Junction Arts organised the events in partnership with Bolsover District Council, Old Bolsover Town Council, English Heritage, Bolsover Place Board, PlatformThirty1 and other community partners.

Junction Arts Managing Director, Emily Bowman said: “Wow, what a weekend we’ve had in Bolsover! The two events celebrated art, technology and local people, with every piece of content co-created with the community and professional artists. These events shine a light on the creativity and strong community spirit that exists in this brilliant town, and we feel so proud to be part of it.

“Thank you to our funders, supporters, partners, volunteers, artists, and everyone who made a lantern or turned out to support these fabulous events.”

Chesterfield community organisations invited to apply for University of Derby funding

A fund created to support local groups, organisations and individuals in Chesterfield and the wider Derbyshire area will return for 2025 following a successful debut.

The University of Derby is inviting applications from anyone based in the city or county who is seeking seed funding for projects that will bring impact to the local area and community and would like to work in partnership with the University to bring their ideas to life.

The Civic Community Fund provided seed funding to five organisations in 2024. They were music and arts development group Baby People, Chesterfield-based inclusive arts project SocialFuse Festival, children’s mental wellbeing CIC Bridge The Gap, Hands on Skin – an initiative which looks at exploring identity and cultural heritage through drum rhythms – and a project that co-creates poetry around nature connectedness and the Whispers From The Woods poetry book.

As well as receiving a grant from the University of Derby, successful applicants were also invited to work closely with researchers and other experts at the University to profile and share their work within the wider civic community.

Destination Chesterfield Board Member, Ann Fomukong-Boden used the funding to host SocialFuse Festival; an inclusive event held in Chesterfield over the summer which showcased various social enterprises from across the county.

She said: “The contribution we received from the Civic Community Fund enabled us to host SocialFuse Festival earlier this year, and to ensure that the event was free for all attendees.

“This meant that everyone in the community could join in, regardless of their financial situation.

“It is important to us that SocialFuse Festival is accessible to all, and we are grateful to the University of Derby for the support it has given us.”

The Civic Community Fund is designed to support the work of the University’s Civic University Agreement, which was launched in June 2022, by creating new partnerships locally and providing support to civic projects that will have a positive impact within the community.

Although the Civic Community Fund is a relatively new initiative, the University has supported local community projects for decades, providing funding to inspiring groups across Derbyshire who make a real difference to people’s lives.

Dr Rhiannon Jones, (Associate Professor of Civic Practice) and Head of Civic and Communities at the University of Derby, said: “The University of Derby is proud to be a Civic organisation that is committed to playing its part in the city and county’s ongoing prosperity and wellbeing, supporting local communities and the people within them, working closely with our stakeholders and partners to deliver our Civic University Agreement.

“The Civic Community Fund has been a hugely successful initiative, and we are looking forward to receiving applications for 2025.

“The fund is a fantastic way of enabling us to provide bespoke support for local groups and individuals whose endeavours would benefit from the support the University can offer. We are looking for people who want to partner with us in the longer term, to work with our experts to develop their brilliant projects and make a real impact in the local area.”

Applications for the Civic Community Fund should be made via the university’s website before January 31. Applicants will be notified of funding application outcomes by February 14, 2025.

University of Derby supports the marketing and economic growth of the town through Chesterfield Champions, a network of over 200 organisations across Chesterfield and North Derbyshire.

Business Advisory Board for the East Midlands meets for the first time

Business leaders and entrepreneurs from across the region have been appointed to the East Midlands Combined County Authority’s (EMCCA) Business Advisory Board.

Following an extensive recruitment process, 11 business representatives have been recruited to the board, and they met earlier today for the inaugural meeting of the Business Advisory Board, which took place at Bolsover District Council in Derbyshire.

The Business Advisory Board, chaired by David Williams, Chairman of Geldards and EMCCA’s Associate Member for Business, will provide strategy, advice and guidance to the EMCCA Board.

The purpose of the Board is to strengthen the connection between EMCCA and local businesses in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. It will help ensure the experience and knowledge of regional businesses, large and small, is harnessed when making decisions on the economy, skills, transport, housing and the transition to net zero.

At the inaugural meeting, members were provided with an overview of EMCCA’s recently launched Inclusive Growth Commission and discussed how the Business Advisory Board will inform its work. The advisory board members also discussed the current investment strategy and pipeline of development currently underway in the region, providing their input and feedback to the plans outlined.

Two Destination Chesterfield Board Members are also represented on the EMCCA Business advisory board; Scott Knowles, Chief Executive, East Midlands Chamber and Andrew Byrne, Property Development Director, Devonshire Group.

David Williams, Chair of the Business Advisory Board said: “I was delighted to welcome members of the Business Advisory Board to our inaugural meeting earlier today. We had an excellent discussion and heard great contributions from our members, who provide good representation from across our region in terms of sectors, geography, and small, medium and large businesses.”

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward said: “The Business Advisory Board is an important part of our collaboration with our local businesses and I look forward to hearing the views of board members going forward as we progress our work on the Inclusive Growth Commission, and our investment pipeline for our region.”
