Canal Trust unearths Chesterfield’s past in archaeological dig

As part of its Staveley Town Deal project, the Chesterfield Canal Trust commissioned York Archaeology to carry out an archaeological dig on the currently derelict canal at the end of Bellhouse Lane in Staveley.

The intention was to investigate the remains of a railway bridge that was demolished many years ago and to find what remains of the old Bellhouse canal basin. This will inform plans for the design of the canal in the area which will be restored and put back into water next year.

The professional team was on site making preparations for two days including overseeing a digger which was excavating to a depth of about four or five feet. Then volunteers came to help for four days. There were eight volunteers every day and they did a splendid job.

The towpath side abutment wall of the bridge was completely cleared revealing some holes that may have held iron supports for the original girder railway bridge.

Also uncovered were the stone walled narrows that led into a short arm of the canal built to serve the gas works which were sited right next to the canal. It is believed that coal was probably brought from the nearby Hartington Colliery, formerly New Hollingwood Colliery.

The narrows were capped with some massive coping stones which had random holes in them. It was thought that they had been recycled from a former use. The grooves that held stop planks to hold water back for maintenance were as clear and clean as the day that they were cut into the stonework.

Beyond the narrows, a length of dressed stone wall was uncovered, being the bank of the short arm.

Part of the wall of the canal basin itself was discovered as was a land drain which led into a cast iron pipe.

There were a few finds of pottery and bottles and of course coal, but this was incidental to the main purpose of the excavation.

The final day of the dig was designated an Open Day when people could go for guided tours so that the archaeologists could explain everything. Amazingly about 250 people came, all incredibly interested in the work. Many had tales from their childhoods when the basin still held water.

The volunteers ranged from schoolchildren to pensioners. All worked really hard, said how much they had enjoyed the experience and wanted to know when they could come back for more.

The excavation was then filled in again. It will reappear when the canal is restored at the location in about a year’s time.


College celebrates partnership with Chesterfield Royal Hospital

Chesterfield College Group has been made a Partner Member of the Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, announced at the organisation’s annual members meeting.

Held at the hospital’s education centre, Principal Julie Richards was joined on stage by Head of Learning (Vocational/T-Levels) Adam Godber and the Adult Nursing T Level students currently on placement at Chesterfield Royal alongside Chair of the Trust Mahmud Nawaz. Together they talked about the importance of key members of the local community working together for the benefit of all, especially the next generation of workforce who will be tasked with caring for the community.

In a particularly powerful moment, the T Level students told the audience how invaluable the experience of being placed on wards has helped to already mould them into the next generation of hospital staff, they are experiences that will stay with them forever and have inspired them to pursue a career in the sector.

Julie Richards, Principal, explains: “As anchor organisations in our community we’re delighted to be partners with the Trust as we help each other to deliver our objectives and ultimately benefit the people we proudly serve. Inspiring young people into the career they want to pursue is a key part of our mission and hearing our T Level students speak as eloquently and powerfully as they have done about the impact that partnerships such as this one have on them is evidence of just how vital they are.”

Mahmud Nawaz said:” Thank you to Julie and her team for attending our Annual Members Meeting and signing our Collaboration Charter. We are proud to give exceptional care to our community and I believe strongly in the responsibility of being an anchor institution. Over 3,000 of our 5,000 strong colleagues live in the Chesterfield community, they invest in the economy and their children are educated here. Whilst our collaboration with Chesterfield College will inspire some of the next generation of NHS colleagues, we are also proud to show that we are investing in the development and the future of care throughout our community.”


Vicar Lane Opens festive foodbank

To support Chesterfield Foodbank, Vicar Lane is taking part in the LET’S CAN HUNGER campaign once again, to support those most in need within the community this Christmas.

From Wednesday 6th November until Monday 2nd December, visitors can contribute by donating to either of the food banks in Iceland or the Vicar Lane Centre Management Suite.

Summit celebrates collaborative approach to turbocharge Chesterfield’s business growth

Business leaders have outlined details on how Chesterfield’s collaborative approach towards regeneration is creating a perfect environment for business growth.

The Chesterfield Investment Summit took place on Wednesday 6 November 2024 at Casa Hotel, providing an extensive update on various projects that will dramatically increase jobs and prosperity across the borough’s communities.

Destination Chesterfield organised the event, which was supported by Markham Vale, We Are Spaces, and East Midlands Chamber. The summit showcased a range of transformative projects taking place across the Borough, many of which have been made possible thanks to collaborative partnerships created across the public and private sectors.

Delegates heard an update from the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) on the East Midlands Investment Zone, which is set to bring hundreds of high-quality jobs in advanced manufacturing and green industries to the former Staveley Chemical Works site and former Hartington Colliery site.

Speaking at the summit, Cllr Nadine Peatfield, Deputy Mayor of the East Midlands, commented: “The East Midlands Investment Zone is a gamechanger for our region. Under the leadership of Mayor Claire Ward, EMCCA will help create 4,300 jobs and leverage £383m of private investment.

“Investing in the right places at the right times is going to be crucial to deliver the change needed to make this region the best place in the country to live, work and learn.”

Huw Bowen, Chief Executive Officer at Chesterfield Borough Council provided delegates with an extensive update on the town’s wide range of current and future regeneration projects.

These include the Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield scheme, in which contractors are currently on-site carrying out transformations of the town’s famous marketplace and the historic Stephenson Memorial Hall Building.

A further £20m is also expected to be made available to the Chesterfield Town Board as part of the government’s long-term plan for towns, with details of further development in the town centre to be revealed in the future.

In addition, the summit was updated on the progress being made on development in Staveley. Chair of the Staveley Town Deal project, Ivan Fomin said: “Developments are now underway with a £6 million project to improve Staveley Marketplace, ensuring it is a great facility for people living, visiting and working in the area. On top of that, the £4.41 million Staveley Waterside building is being constructed at the canal basin, complementing the wider restoration of the Chesterfield Canal.”

Other speakers included Ojay McDonald, CEO of Association of Town and City Management, Amy Revell, Director at We Are Spaces, Scott Knowles, Chief Executive of East Midlands Chamber, Peter Storey Head of Markham Employment Growth Zone at Derbyshire County Council and David Wells, Director of HBD. Collectively, they called on delegates to continue building on recent momentum, by continuing to work in partnership across sectors to maximise the town’s potential.

Chesterfield Champions to be showcased in the 2025 Peak District, Derbyshire & Derby Tourism Awards

The shortlist for the 2025 Peak District, Derbyshire & Derby Tourism Awards has been revealed, with several Chesterfield Champion organisations featured amongst the finalists.

The annual awards shine a spotlight on excellence and outstanding achievement across the area’s £2.89bn tourism sector.

Champions included in the shortlist include Matlock Farm Park, Peak Edge Hotel and Chatsworth.

Following a record number of entries, finalists have been unveiled in 15 awards categories celebrating the best of the local visitor economy, ranging from hotels, B&Bs and campsites to pubs, visitor attractions and unique experiences.

In addition, public voting has officially opened for the new ‘Festival or Event of the Year’ category which champions quality events and festivals that have taken place in the Peak District and Derbyshire – from country shows and music festivals to unique exhibitions and arts trails.

There are 9 finalists competing to take the title of Festival or Event of the Year 2025, with voting open until 1 December 2024. The finalist with the largest number of votes will secure the crown. Check out the events and festivals in the running and to cast your vote.

Shortlisted businesses in the remaining categories will now go forward to the final round of independent judging, including a series of mystery shopping visits, before the winners are selected ahead of a joint Derbyshire-Nottinghamshire awards ceremony held at the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham on Thursday 20 March 2025.

The region’s two Local Visitor Economy Partnerships (LVEPs) – Visit Peak District, Derbyshire and Derby and Visit Nottinghamshire – are joining forces to deliver the awards ceremony in partnership for the first time, with the support of the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA).

The ceremony will be hosted by Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, and is set to be a stunning showcase of the value and quality of the region’s combined £5.25bn visitor economy, celebrating the exceptional talent and innovation across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

Following the awards ceremony, Gold winners in each of the core categories will progress onto the national VisitEngland Awards for Excellence in June 2025, which represent the highest accolades in English tourism.

Chesterfield Champions shine at Derbyshire Business Awards

Several Chesterfield businesses have been announced as winners at East Midlands Chamber’s annual Derbyshire Business Awards ceremony.

The wins showcase the importance of companies across our town, and the vital role they play in supporting the local economy.

Hosted by ITV presenter Emma Jesson, the Chamber’s Derbyshire Business Awards took place on 25th October in Derby. Awards were presented across 13 categories, in a ceremony accompanied by a three-course dinner and followed by live entertainment.

Kranlee Logistics, based at Markham Vale was a big winner on the night, taking two prestigious awards, including Business of the Year and Small Business of the Year.

Business of the Year is a special award, selected from any one of the category winners during the ceremony. The recipient then goes through to the regional and national British Chambers of Commerce Awards taking place in 2025.

Lee Wells (pictured), Co-Owner of Kranlee commented: “Winning this will elevate us so much within the industry and within the community. We’ve got loyal customers that support us so much, but this might expose us to a lot more customers.

The success for Chesterfield Champions didn’t end there… Chesterfield’s Global Brands were winners of the Business Improvement Through Technology award.

In addition, Laura Holland, founder and Managing Director of Dunston-based Ecotech Engineers, was crowned Entrepreneur of the Year.

East Midlands Chamber Chief Executive Scott Knowles added: “Derbyshire is fortunate to boast a wealth of businesses of all sizes that continually excel, further underlining the East Midlands as a Centre of Trading Excellence. The Edinburgh Woollen Mill to open new Chesterfield store

The Edinburgh Woollen Mill, a renowned British brand with a rich heritage, has announced the opening of its newest store in the heart of Chesterfield.

This expansion brings an array of employment opportunities and an exciting retail destination to Chesterfield town centre and the wider the local community.

Founded in 1946 as the Langholm Dyeing and Finishing Company Limited in the thriving mill town of the Scottish Borders, Edinburgh Woollen Mill has evolved into a household name with a portfolio of 200 stores nationwide.

The brand’s presence extends across High Street, Tourist, and Garden Centre locations, captivating shoppers with its diverse and high-quality offerings.

The new store, located in Chesterfield, will open its doors on Thursday 31st October 2024, and the retailer will celebrate its arrival with some fantastic giveaways.

Chesterfield Pubwatch named National Pubwatch of the Year

Chesterfield Pubwatch, a local scheme that aims to reduce alcohol-related crime, has been named ‘National Pubwatch of the Year at a prestigious awards event at the House of Lords.

The scheme, which has been operating for more than 20 years, picked up the top accolade at the National Pubwatch awards ceremony on 22 October 2024.

The award, which is judged by members of the National Pubwatch Committee, recognises the work of local Pubwatch schemes and their efforts to provide safe drinking environments for customers and staff.

Chesterfield Pubwatch is run by local business owners, with support from Chesterfield Borough Council’s licensing team, Derbyshire Constabulary and other local partners with the aim of supporting a safe environment within the night-time economy.

The scheme was recognised as an effective and forward-thinking organisation after a number of initiatives have been rolled out across the town to help provide a safer environment for customers and staff alike – including new ways for venues, police, and the local authority to share information.

Together with Chesterfield Borough Council, Chesterfield Pubwatch has delivered an upgraded digital radio communications network across the town – allowing licensed premises to communicate effectively with each other and key stakeholders such as the Police. This system is instrumental in maintaining safety and security in the town.

Additionally, Chesterfield Pubwatch has also supported the launch of the Best Bar None scheme in the town – with 22 local businesses already being awarded the accreditation, which helps to reduce alcohol-related crime and create a safer night out.

Roger Butler, Chair of Chesterfield Pubwatch, said: “We are delighted that our efforts have being recognised and that we have been named as National Pubwatch of the Year.

“With help from National Pubwatch, the local police force, the borough council and licensees’ we are confident that Chesterfield is a safer place to socialise and enjoy the many facilities on offer.

“The award recognises what we have achieved so far, but we will continue to work with local businesses and groups to look at what else we can do to make sure everyone can enjoy a safe night out in Chesterfield.”

Councillor Steve Lismore, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “Chesterfield is a safe place to live, visit and socialise and we’re lucky to have so many licensed venues for people to enjoy – but like towns and cities around the country, alcohol-related crime and disorder can sometimes be an issue.

“Chesterfield Pubwatch continue to work tirelessly across in our communities to reduce this type of behaviour and I am delighted to see that those efforts have been recognised by National Pubwatch – a huge congratulations to all of the team.”

National Pubwatch is a voluntary organisation, which supports over 800 Pubwatch schemes across the UK, and works to promote safe, secure and social drinking environments in all licensed premises throughout the UK.

Champions collaborate on Peak Village improvements

The Devonshire Group has collaborated with local businesses, including Chesterfield Champion Peak Architects, to refurbish park of North Derbyshire’s Peak Village shopping centre.

Visitors to the centre are set to enjoy a new and improved shopping experience as works to the Caffè Massarella conservatory come to an end.

The refurbishment has seen the conservatory transformed following the introduction of new glass fronting and skylights, creating a brighter, more modern space for shoppers to relax and unwind.

Peak Village’s proud Derbyshire heritage has been prioritised throughout, with Peak Architects and Sheffield-based design studio, 93ft appointed to lead the works and help to create a design that better complements the site’s existing architecture, including the Grade II listed Old Station Building opposite.

Complementing the ongoing improvement works, the team at Peak Village have also unveiled a new look across its branding, which visitors will now be able to spot on the signage at the retail destination, as well as the centre’s website. This is the latest milestone in £2 million of customer experience investments made by owners The Devonshire Group since purchasing the site three years ago.

Katayune Jacquin, centre manager at Peak Village, said: “‘We have seen how investment since the acquisition has supported the significant growth of footfall, customer spend and interest from a diverse range of tenants. This most recent round of improvements into the buildings and environment, our brand and digital presence contribute to the creation of an appealing venue for local communities and visitors to Derbyshire and the Peak District.

“The new conservatory sits in a key location of the village where visitors enjoy refreshments from an established and popular tenant. Our investment into the exterior, and Caffè Massarella’s into the interior, demonstrates working in partnership to continually improve and grow.”


Local design agency Crush welcomes new Account Director

Chesterfield-based design agency Crush has welcomed new Account Director, Chris Vannozzi, to oversee the company’s growing portfolio of creative projects in branding, design, digital and marketing.

Founded in 2004, Crush works with brands both close to home, and across the globe.

As an independent agency, Crush’s team has grown considerably over their 21 years in the business. Starting with just one woman, Natalie Burkinshaw (Founder and Creative Director), the Crush team now encompasses an impressive, wide range of talents in brand strategy, design, website development, copywriting and marketing support.

With over 25 years experience working for London agencies in content marketing and commercial strategy, Chris’ wealth of expertise will lend a hand not only to nurturing client relationships at Crush, but also to strategy and big-picture perspective for their creative campaigns.

Chris has delivered creative projects for world-recognised brands such as Unilever, P&G, John Lewis and M&S – as well as public sector projects for King’s College London, Development Media International and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

UKATA to host mock trial event at National Justice Museum

UKATA is set to host a unique Asbestos Mock Trial event on Monday 28th October at the National Justice Museum in Nottingham. It aims to educate industry professionals about the legal intricacies of asbestos-related claims through an engaging courtroom reenactment.

The event will feature expert speakers from various fields, including legal professionals, health and safety advocates, and industry leaders, providing invaluable insights into the complexities of asbestos litigation. New canal bridge installed at Staveley

Staveley has gained a new impressive landmark, following the installation of the new Trans Pennine Bridge over the Chesterfield Canal.

The structure was lowered into place on Monday, October 21st. It spans 38 meters in length and weighs around 40 tons.

It replaces a brick bridge on what was originally the Great Central Railway. The old bridge was knocked down about thirty years ago and since then users of the Trail have had to go on a ‘zig-zag up and down’ route. They will now be able to go straight over the new bridge.

The project has been managed by the Chesterfield Canal Trust. It is the first phase of a £6 million canal restoration scheme. Most of the money will come from the Staveley Town Deal, a £25.2 million investment in Staveley through the Government’s Towns Fund, covering ten projects in all.

O’Brien Contractors readied the site and installed the massive bearing structures. CTS Bridges delivered the two halves of the bridge on 8th October. These were welded together and painted before the final lift took place. The rest of the earthworks and finishing works will now be completed ready for the bridge to be opened to the public before the end of October.

O’Brien Contractors Director, Tony Mitchell commented: “The installation of the bridge marks the continuing works towards the reinstatement of the Chesterfield Canal and O’Brien Contractors are proud that we have been able to contribute to this.”

Ivan Fomin, Chair of the Staveley Town Deal, said: “This is not only a huge milestone for the Chesterfield Canal Trust but also for the Staveley Town Deal. Work to restore the Canal is one of our key projects and will help attract more visitors and improve outdoor facilities for residents. There has a been a lot of hard work to get to this point and I want to thank all the staff and volunteers at the Trust for their efforts.”

Next year, a length of canal will be reinstated under the bridge along with a new lock and another accommodation bridge at the bottom of Bellhouse Lane. There will also be a pumping system and Bellhouse Basin will be restored. The towpath will be upgraded to a multi-user trail, stretching over two kilometres all the way across the Doe Lea Valley to Renishaw.

Finally, the whole area will be planted with wildlife friendly vegetation and a seating area will be installed for people to enjoy the tranquillity of the newly restored canal. You will be able to follow the progress of the works as they happen by going to the Chesterfield Canal Trust’s website.

It proves to our supporters and to potential funders that we can take on huge engineering challenges and bring them to fruition. We owe a great debt of thanks to our Development Manager, George Rogers, who has been working on the whole project for four years, and to Jon Lindley of Beyond consultants who has managed the bridge project with O’Brien’s.”

Work set to begin on regeneration of Staveley market

A multi-million pound regeneration project is set to begin in Staveley in November.

Chesterfield Borough Council’s Staveley 21 project, funded through the Staveley Town Deal, includes the construction of a new landmark building in the town centre, improvements to the market square and rejuvenation of the high street. Together the works will help support local businesses by creating a more attractive, welcoming and safe town centre for everyone to enjoy.

A drop-in session will be held in Staveley market square from 1pm to 3pm on Wednesday 23 October where local residents and business owners can come and find out more about the plans and the programme for construction.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “This project will transform Staveley town centre and encourage more people to visit to support both existing retailers and market traders. The project will help expand the town centre offer, creating new opportunities for events and social spaces we want to boost visitor numbers and provide the space for local businesses to thrive.

“We’ve been speaking with local businesses and hosting drop-in sessions throughout the design process to ensure the plans are right and at this next drop-in session you’ll be able to speak with the contractor who is delivering the project and find out more about the programme.

“We’re trying to minimise the disruption caused in the town centre to ensure that businesses can continue to trade and will be ready to benefit from the improvements once work is complete.

“This is a really exciting project for Staveley and will help ensure that the town can thrive for generations to come.”

Stepnell who have been working to complete the town centre designs have been appointed to lead construction on the Staveley 21 project.

Tom Sewell, regional director at Stepnell, said: “Staveley 21 will be incredibly transformative for the town centre and as a complete construction partner with vast experience enhancing public spaces, we recognise the importance of close collaboration with local authorities, partners and future users to exceed on these expectations.

“Early engagement with the local community is vital to ensuring the landmark building, market and high street can maximise their impact and we have made great progress since our appointment. Social value can be just as transformative to the community as the build itself, and the Staveley Town Deal will encompass this approach as we look to commence works.”

Works in November will begin with the removal of the disused toilet block on the market square.

In its place a new landmark building will be built that will form a new focal point for the town centre. Once completed the building will house Derbyshire County Council’s Staveley Library on the ground floor and the upstairs will provide space for new businesses.

Staveley 21 also includes the transformation of the marketplace to create an enlarged public space to support existing uses such as Staveley Town Council’s regular markets but also as a setting that can be used to host a wide range of new events to encourage more people to visit the town centre.

Proposals include new tiered outdoor seating to support outdoor theatre and performances, and natural play equipment to help make the marketplace more attractive to families.

Designs for the play equipment have been developed in collaboration with pupils from Staveley Junior School, who visited the site with Stepnell and took part in a workshop to discuss what kind of equipment they would like to see installed.

New paving, lighting, street furniture and planting will help create an enhanced atmosphere and visitor experience at any time of day or night whilst new signage will help connect the town centre with Staveley’s other visitor attractions including the Chesterfield Canal and Staveley Hall.

There is also a shop front improvement grant scheme for businesses based in the town centre. Up to 80% of the costs of shop front improvements like new signage, windows, canopies, and much more can be funded through the scheme.

Through the Animate Chesterfield public art project, Coralie Turpin has been appointed to work with the community and develop a new piece of artwork that will celebrate Staveley’s heritage and develop designs that can be incorporated into the new paving.

Coralie said: “I am looking forward to working with the people of Staveley, we’re planning some fun activities reflecting the local canal heritage and nature to generate ideas for the design. I’m excited to create a great piece of public art for the new marketplace that is friendly and interactive.”

Around £5 million of funding has been provided through the Staveley Town Deal, a £25.2 million programme that aims to ensure Staveley is a place to start, stay and grow.

Tricia Gilby, leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and vice chair of the Staveley Town Deal Board, said: “I’m pleased that work will be starting soon on Staveley 21, this is a key project in the Town Deal programme and will make a real impact on the ability of the town centre to attract additional visitors to support local businesses and explore the Staveley area. I look forward to seeing the plans come to life over the next year.”

Immersive light show returns to Bolsover Castle

Bright Winter Nights will return to Bolsover Castle this November, illuminating the town’s iconic landmark and featuring a newly commissioned interactive digital art installation.

The immersive light experience was launched in 2023 by Junction Arts to mark the 30th anniversary of the lantern parade. This year, the event promises to be bigger and better, with three new light installations, co-created with the local community and specialist artists.

Bolsover Castle will once again come to life with live projections, images and sounds, celebrating local people, technology and art.

The centrepiece for this year’s Bright Winter Nights has been commissioned by the Bolsover Place Board and will feature a dazzling, interactive installation. It will be created in collaboration with Derbyshire storytellers Babbling Vagabonds, video projection artists Illuminos and young people in Bolsover.

The numerous light displays will feature a diverse range of voices, including an installation co-created by the LGBTQIA+ community via a national partnership with Dreamy Place, who stage festivals in Brighton and Crawley.

Participants from the PlatformThirty1 project ‘Know Your Neighbourhood’ will also see their work featured in Bright Winter Nights. The project is a creative community project designed to increase opportunities for connection for individuals and reduce loneliness. Through creative workshops in communal spaces, participants have explored a wide range of art forms, including painting, crochet, collage and embroidery.

Kylie North, Project Manager at Junction Arts said: “Bright Winter Nights is back, with more lights, more projections, more community involvement and more chances to engage with the artworks.

We’re excited to be working in partnership with so many great organisations to bring together one amazing event that will mark the start of the festive season. Every piece of content at Bright Winter Nights has been co-created by the community, working with professional artists – representing voices from all parts of Bolsover.”

“The concept of the event is the same as last year, but all the content is new for 2024, with more interactive elements for visitors to explore, immerse themselves in and enjoy. There’ll also be plenty of surprises, we can’t wait for people to come along and experience it.”
