The global manufacturer has scooped the 2025 accolade for innovation, following its win last year in international trade.

Heraeus Electro-Nite (UK) is one of only 16 firms to be recognised in the East Midlands. The King’s Award for Enterprise is the highest official UK award for British businesses, recognising and celebrating outstanding achievements in enterprise.

Winners can fly the King’s Awards flag at their main office and use the emblem on marketing materials. Often seen as a Royal Seal of approval, this award is highly valued by suppliers, customers, and employees, demonstrating commitment to innovation and excellence.

Heraeus Electro-Nite (UK) is based in Sheepbridge in Chesterfield and has been trading since 1989. It is the market leader in measurement technology in molten metals. The global Heraeus Group employs over 70 people, headquartered in Hanau, Germany.

“We are immensely proud to see that our innovative technologies CasTemp: Continuous temperature measurement in liquid steel, and CoreTemp: A man-less, on-demand measurement system for the electric furnace, have been recognised for their value and impact on the global steel and metals industry.

Chesterfield showcases £2 billion regeneration vision at UKREiiF 2025

Chesterfield is set to unveil its ambitious £2 billion regeneration programme at the UK Real Estate Investment and Infrastructure Forum (UKREiiF) in Leeds from May 20–22, positioning itself as one of the most exciting growth areas in the East Midlands.

Chesterfield’s presence will focus on a wide range of investment-ready opportunities across housing, town centre regeneration, green industries, advanced manufacturing, retail, leisure, and tourism.

Attendees can explore Chesterfield’s £2 billion transformation journey, learn more about current developments, and connect with decision-makers directly.

The borough is a key player in the East Midlands’ advanced manufacturing sector, anchored by the highly successful Markham Vale enterprise zone at Junction 29a of the M1. Home to dozens of businesses and built with infrastructure to scale, Markham Vale exemplifies the strategic commercial opportunity that Chesterfield is keen to promote.

Further strengthening the borough’s investment case is its inclusion in the East Midlands Investment Zone, with two sites at Staveley offering financial incentives for companies in green technologies and advanced manufacturing.

Chesterfield’s town centre is undergoing a major transformation, with investment creating vibrant opportunities for new homes, leisure, retail, hotel developments, and modern office space. These enhancements are not only improving the quality of life for residents but also attracting a new wave of businesses and visitors.

Andrew Byrne, Chair of Destination Chesterfield, commented: “Chesterfield’s regeneration story is one of ambition, collaboration, and real momentum. We’re delivering well-connected, future-proofed developments that unlock value across multiple sectors—from housing and advanced manufacturing to town centre regeneration and the visitor economy.

“With a proactive local authority, strategic location, and a shared commitment to inclusive growth, we’re creating an environment where investors and businesses can thrive. We are ready to welcome your business.”

Cllr Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “Chesterfield is on the rise. Over the past decade, we’ve seen a wave of transformation—and we’re just getting started.

“Our borough is becoming a magnet for innovation, sustainable growth, and talent. From housing and advanced manufacturing to retail and hospitality, we’re inviting investors and partners to be part of Chesterfield’s next exciting chapter.”

Destination Chesterfield will join a united delegation in the brand-new East Midlands Pavilion, which will present a bold new vision for inclusive growth across the region.

Mayor of the East Midlands Claire Ward will lead the East Midlands team, which also includes the leadership team from the East Midlands Combined County Authority, Destination Chesterfield, Marketing Derby, Invest in Nottingham, Invest in Derbyshire and East Midlands Freeport.

Chesterfield Champions: “We’re seeing new tenants moving into our town and getting things done”

Chesterfield is improving its standing as an attractive town for businesses and professionals, according to leading figures from the local business community.

At a recent round table hosted by Destination Chesterfield at BHP Accountants, business leaders gathered to discuss the town’s ongoing regeneration, its central location, and why more people and companies are choosing to make Chesterfield their base.

Participants were optimistic about the town’s visible progress and the impact of recent development projects.

Anna Melton, Director at In the Works PR, shared her observations on the town centre’s transformation: “The mix of businesses is changing and we’re seeing more residential development. Independents like Adorn Jewellers continue to do well.

“We’re also seeing more leisure, along with restaurants and bars. Bottle & Thyme moved into Elder Way and then opened a new bar opposite! My Dentist have moved into the town centre, and we’ve also seen Hotpod Yoga move in. So, I think we’re starting to see businesses and consumer habits in the town centre shift.”

Jane Cooper, Partner at Graysons Solicitors, spoke about the changing face of Whittington Moor, with The Glassyard becoming an exciting business hub: “We moved in (to The Glassyard) about 18 months ago. When we arrived, there was just The Batch House and maybe a couple of other businesses.

“Now it’s almost full, and the car park is always busy! When we first moved in, I wondered whether it would fill up, and with what types of businesses. There’s a real mix of businesses there. It has really taken off, and it’s nice to see.”

Progress is still being made on the revitalisation of Chesterfield’s marketplace, with the second phase now underway. The first phase completed in March has already seen bright new stalls, new furniture and paving, and the opening up of the historic town pump. In addition, work to refurbish the historic Stephenson Memorial Hall to create a new theatre, museum and community space is also progressing, with completion expected in 2026.

In Staveley, the £25 million Town Deal fund is helping to regenerate the high street, support development in key industries of rail and construction, and create new commercial space to encourage further investment and jobs.

Groundworks are also well underway at the long-awaited PEAK in Unstone, bringing further experiential retail, leisure and educational facilities, a wellness clinic, up to 2,000 hotel rooms and 250 holiday lodges.

Andrew McDaid, Partner at Mitchells Accountants, added: “Major commercial developments take time to complete. People get frustrated and ask, ‘Are we still talking about that?’ But when you can physically see things happening, it’s great! We are now seeing new tenants moving into our town and things getting done.”

Chesterfield’s location in the heart of the country remains a major draw for firms looking to reduce costs and carbon footprints. Dan Molloy, Director at Choice Utility, explained:

“One of the big draws for businesses is the fact that we’re right in the middle of the UK. Having lower distances means lower costs, and a lower carbon footprint.”

The town’s rail connectivity also provides businesses with efficient links to the capital and beyond.

“I also appreciate how close London is to us here,” said Anna Melton. “With the direct rail link, we can be there in two hours. It takes less time to get there than some commuters take to travel into the capital from Kent.”

Chesterfield’s connectivity was also cited as a major advantage in attracting skilled young people to the area.

Nicola O’Sullivan, Director at BHP Accountants said: “We tend to have a mix of apprentices. Some are Chesterfield-based, some are from Matlock or Belper, so many come from other Derbyshire towns and the Peak District to work here. Also some will come from Sheffield or Derby to work here. We advertise locally, but the applicants we get are a mix.”

Anna Melton said: “16- and 17-year-olds tend not to have their own transport yet, so they are reliant on public transport. Chesterfield clearly offers that convenience.

“As well as businesses supporting each other, we do also have to support our young people, whether that is through work experience, careers advice or going into schools. We must keep showing them what is available here because all too often, they think they’ve got to go out to the cities, which is not the case. We certainly have those opportunities here.”

Business leaders agreed that Chesterfield is not only a good place to work, but a great place to live.

Jane Cooper spoke about the personal decision she and her husband made to make Chesterfield home:

“We wanted to stay here because I wanted that geographical separation from work. Also, it was just so much nicer here. It was more like the places we’d come from, the smaller community rather than a bigger city. We wanted the open spaces and countryside, and we could get that here whilst still having all the shops and amenities that Chesterfield offered. It’s a perfect place to live.”

This blend of green space, accessibility, and strong community spirit was echoed by Nicola O’Sullivan:

“We’re expecting in the coming months for a lot more of our staff to work from Chesterfield rather than Sheffield, because they won’t want to pay Sheffield parking prices. Chesterfield is more affordable, so we’re expecting more of an influx of people coming to work here.”

Iconic Chesterfield department store snapped up by developer

Nottingham-based ALB Group has acquired the former Marks and Spencer department store in one of Chesterfield town centre’s most prominent buildings.

The developer stepped in to make the deal for an undisclosed fee before the 68,000 sq ft premises, comprising two adjacent buildings, was due to be offered at auction, for a guide price of over £3m.

Marks and Spencer vacated the store in High Street, Chesterfield, over two years ago when it relocated to nearby Ravenside Retail Park.

The premises is distributed over five floors and occupies a prime location next door to Primark and opposite Chesterfield’s historic open air market, in Market Place, which has been undergoing a major refurbishment.

ALB Group is currently in advanced negotiations with a major retailer interested in taking up part of the ground floor of the building. The firm is seeking additional tenants for the remaining ground floor commercial space.

The upper floors are expected to be either residential, office space or commercial use pending further consultations with ALB’s architect John Morgan, of Nottingham-based architect Leonard Design.

Arran Bailey, managing director of ALB Group, said: “We’re delighted to have secured the deal to purchase this magnificent property.”

Oliver Marshall, director of FHP Property Consultants, which is marketing the building on behalf of ALB Group, said: “While we are close to securing a major tenant for part of the ground floor of the building, we are seeking additional businesses to take up the remaining space.

“There will be up to 10,000 square feet available, which could be let to a single tenant or carved up as appropriate to sizes ranging from around 3,000 square feet. All interest will be considered, whether it’s from retail businesses, leisure, cafés or restaurants.”

ALB Group, which has gained a reputation over the past few years for regenerating buildings in town and city centres across the UK, recently transformed another large property in Chesterfield town centre just a stone’s throw from the M&S building.

Last year, the developer launched 55 high-spec apartments, built on the upper floors of Burlington House, in Burlington Street, replacing the once run-down vacant office space.

ALB Group has become known for town centre revitalisation through a combination of cheaper, more flexible lease contracts with businesses and bringing the vacant upper storeys of commercial buildings back into use, largely through the creation of much-needed residential units.

The company has transformed high streets in places including Ipswich, Stoke-on-Trent, Derby, Huddersfield and Birkenhead, delivering significantly increased footfall in each of those areas.

ALB Group is known for its regeneration of the Bridlesmith Gate area of Nottingham, where it purchased 14 buildings and has successfully given the once-struggling city centre location a vibe that has been likened to London’s trendy Carnaby Street.

Arran said: “Chesterfield is definitely on the up. Like all town and city centres it has suffered from the increase in online shopping, the cost-of-living crisis and the relocation of larger chains to out-of-town retail parks.

“But the mood is shifting in a positive direction, and we hope to be able to provide a catalyst to that now that we have acquired one of the town’s best-located and most historic buildings.

“We can guarantee that we will help to breathe new life into this area, just like we did with Burlington House.”

Businesses interested in letting the available space on the ground floor of the building can contact Oliver Marshall on 07887 787885 or email oliver@fhp.co.uk

FHP Property Consultants supports the marketing and economic growth of the town through Chesterfield Champions, a network of over 230 organisations across Chesterfield and North Derbyshire.

Chesterfield entrepreneur embarks on new business challenge at 77

At 77 years old, a Chesterfield entrepreneur is proving age is but a number, embarking on a new non-profit business journey.

After a lifetime in Local Government and 17 years in retirement, Keith Wood has decided to “rise again from the ashes” as The Yorkshire Fenix, starting up a range of not-for-profit ventures on a business basis in our town.

Yorkshire Fenix Enterprises will specialise in several services, including customised work and leisure wear featuring unique designs, creative writing, public speaking and local venue brokering.

As a creative writer, Keith’s first local historical novel features Chesterfield in the mid-18th Century and is due for release in May. As if this is not enough to fill his time, Keith also works with Dr Elizabeth Rosario, GP and coach, who helps individuals do their best for ageing parents so that they can enjoy life again.

Keith’s philosophy is to embrace new technology whilst still retaining old-fashioned values of good service and value for money. All profits are set to be donated to local charities, which Keith is now inviting to become involved.

Speaking about his business journey so far in our town, Keith commented: “Networking has helped me greatly, and I think this is the way ahead, especially for start-up businesses. I have been helped and encouraged by Caroline Moore from Securit GB – The Speed Shop, a print company, who supply my customised clothing and business cards, operating out of The Glass Yard, Sheffield Road.

“I would also like to thank Ruth Postins, Façade Consultant in Modern Methods of Construction, Kerry Lancaster of Shine On Valeting Services and Patrick and Meg, the new owners of Ye Royal Oak who have helped in my literary ventures… The pub actually features in my novel!

“These people have all freely offered to help me set up my business, and I can’t thank them enough.”

Keith adds: “My adopted home town has a lot to offer, lots of historic buildings to discover, a fabulous library, good local leisure amenities like the Winding Wheel and friendly residents.

“It’s a traditional market town close to beautiful countryside in the middle of England with decent transport links and an ambitious business sector under the banner of Destination Chesterfield.”

Keith is currently constructing his website, queries can be directed to him via email: keith@yorkshirefenix.com.

Chesterfield’s oldest pub to reopen this Easter weekend

The couple who have taken ownership of Chesterfield’s oldest pub say they’re ‘beyond delighted’ to be opening its doors once again this weekend.

Ye Royal Oak, based in The Shambles, right in the heart of the town, has undergone a major transformation – with bright décor, a refurbished bar, and even a suit of armour on display.

The pub, which is estimated to date back to the 17th century, has been closed for several years. But thanks to the vision of former teachers Meg Hartman and Patrick Hopkins, customers will be welcomed back to Ye Royal Oak from this Friday (18th April).

Visitors will be treated to more than a dozen keg and cask ales, Devon cider, Highland whisky and more. For those feeling peckish, the pub will be serving Pieminister pies too.

Speaking on the restoration, Meg said: “We wanted to restore the building back to its former glory. After sitting closed for four years, it just felt a bit sad. It’s not just any pub—it’s the town’s pub, so we really wanted to do right by it.”

“We stripped everything back. Underneath all the layers of previous decoration was this beautiful wood. We embraced the history, kept it simple, and let the old beams and Tudor features do the talking.”

“It’s been our lifelong dream to buy a suit of armour— so we finally made that happen.”

Ornamental suit of armour inside historic pub

Patrick added that the process of renovating the venue was an eye-opening experience: “We started by peeling back layers of wallpaper, layers of history. Some of it was horrendous, some of it was quite cool.”

“For the first three months, we were teaching during the day, then coming here every night. We even used half-term to work on it. It’s been full-on, but we feel it’s been worth it.

“This has been about giving something back. This pub has been part of the town’s history for so long, and now it’s our job to look after it.”

The work done by Meg and Patrick has been commended by Shaun Stevenson, creator of the Chesterfield Great Historic Pub Tour events. Shaun said: “What Meg and Patrick have achieved here is remarkable.

“This little historic pub has had a proper restoration. It’s like it’s had a heart adjustment—a full set of new valves. It’s beating again, right at the centre of the town. It’s something to be commended and supported.”

“You can see the revival happening across Chesterfield. Places like The Bank, The Spread Eagle, and this pub are reopening, there’s a real transformation underway.

“This isn’t just another pub—it’s part of Chesterfield’s living history. Anyone who visits will see that, and I’m certain they’ll come back.”

Chesterfield design agency wins international award for rebrand

transform awards

Local design agency Crush won Bronze at the continental Transform Awards Europe 2025, in recognition of their rebrand for German engineering firm, Ziemann Holvrieka.

These awards see hundreds of leading design and branding agencies, from across the entirety of Europe, enter with their latest projects in rebranding and brand development.

Natalie Burkinshaw, Founder and Creative Director, Crush commented: “Crush hasn’t entered any awards over the years, but this year we felt that it was about time we showed off our work to the world – giving us a chance to compete against some of the biggest and most acclaimed design agencies out there.

“To have even been shortlisted, let alone win Bronze, has meant the world to us as a small, independent Chesterfield-based agency.”

Working with Ziemann Holvrieka, a global leader in the beverage processing industry, the Crush team created a comprehensive, modern corporate rebrand, aimed at positioning the engineering company as forward-thinking and innovative within its ever-changing sector.

“The new look is sleek, professional and confident, allowing Ziemann Holvrieka to communicate its industry expertise and ambitious future aspirations.”

“We want to work with people we know and trust” – Chesterfield’s firms celebrate town’s vibrant business community

Chesterfield’s community of businesses have highlighted the strength and togetherness of companies in the local area, citing an environment where firms thrive on collaboration rather than competition.

The recent Celebrate Local round table discussion, hosted by Destination Chesterfield at BHP Chartered Accountants’ new One Waterside Place office, highlighted the depth of this community spirit. Local business leaders in the town’s community of Chesterfield Champions shared their thoughts on why Chesterfield stands out as a place of collaboration and opportunity.

Delegates agreed that one of Chesterfield’s greatest strengths is how businesses work together to create opportunities and keep wealth within the town.

Anna Melton, Director of In the Works PR, emphasised the importance of local businesses supporting each other: “It’s beneficial that businesses in the town work together. If nothing else, it is sharing the wealth and keeping it local.

“Plus, if you’re using another business in the town, you can meet up in person. I think that’s important—to be able to sit across the table or have a coffee with them. If you’re working with someone on a project, being able to nip over and see the people you’re working with does make a real difference.”

This sense of connectivity is a defining feature of the business culture in Chesterfield. Andrew McDaid, Partner at Mitchells Accountants, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the difference between Chesterfield and larger cities:

“I think we do it very well. People might say it’s a bit colloquial, but I think we want to work with people we know and trust. For example, as an accountancy firm, we will always use a Chesterfield solicitor first wherever we can.

“We also do business in places like Sheffield, Leeds, and Nottingham, but I genuinely believe Chesterfield is a much more friendly, supportive, and collaborative environment. It’s not just about ‘what’s in it for me.’ I think we take that for granted, but when you spend time in bigger cities, you realise that isn’t the norm.”

At the heart of Chesterfield’s community is its historic marketplace, which continues to evolve while maintaining its strong local identity. In March, the first completed phase of the multi-million-pound regeneration project to revitalise the market square was completed.

Work in the upper half of the market has included the installation of new feature paving, relaying of the traditional cobbles to ensure better accessibility, the creation of modern market stalls, new street furniture and improvements to drainage, security and other infrastructure.

Nicola O’Sullivan, Director at BHP Accountants, spoke about the impact of giving the market a fresh new look: “The regeneration of the market will have a big impact on Chesterfield. That is Chesterfield’s heritage – we’re a market town, after all.

“The stalls look brighter now and really advertise the town, which brings it all together. It sends a message that this is a market town, and all the traders are together, rather than each trader just having its own little spot. I think it is clearly making the marketplace more attractive for traders and visitors. Having events on in our town makes a big difference, too. We do a lot of things that other places either can’t or don’t do, which is a real success story.”

Dan Molloy, Director at Choice Utility, highlighted a cultural shift that is reinforcing the importance of the regenerated marketplace: “I think we’re seeing a cultural change happening. If you look at Gen Z, they’re buying their produce more thoughtfully. They want to know it is fresh, they are looking at things more sustainably.

“We have a more educated and information-led customer base these days, especially compared to 20 or 30 years ago. So, there is a real opportunity with our market to put that into practice and take advantage.”

The second phase of the Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield project is now underway in the lower half of the market square. It includes similar work to create a more open market that can support a wider range of markets and events.

For Chesterfield to continue thriving, investing in young people is also crucial, with businesses working with public sector organisations, training providers and institutions such as Chesterfield College, local secondary schools and nearby universities to identify talent.

Anna Melton pointed out the role businesses must play in encouraging ambitious young professionals to stay in the area: “We have some great young people in this town, and we have some great schools too. They’re producing students at 16 or 18 years old, who need jobs and training to build a career. They want those pathways to successful careers, so I would say to any company looking to invest here, you’ve got a strong and willing workforce.”

Chesterfield Champions are continuing to support initiatives which create an environment where young professionals feel supported to grow and develop. By having opportunities for local people to gain the skills needed to build rewarding careers, companies have a pool of talent to ensure they grow and operate successfully.

More than 3,000 young people have participated in site visits to local businesses in Chesterfield over the last 10 years through the Made in Chesterfield initiative, giving school pupils hands-on experiences of the workplace.

Elsewhere, Chesterfield College is actively supporting apprenticeships, with the development of a new advanced manufacturing and life sciences facility now underway. The Construction Skills Hub at Mastin Moor is also helping young people gain real-world experience and knowledge in construction trades.

Dan Molloy shared his positive experience of working alongside the college in recruiting apprentices: “Chesterfield College is good at supporting their students and businesses by promoting apprenticeships. They’ve held my hand through the process, and we’re looking to take on apprentices this year.

“I like how business is done in Chesterfield. It’s been a positive experience with almost everyone I’ve done business with.”

Jane Cooper, Partner at Graysons Solicitors summed up the discussion by highlighting how Chesterfield’s collaborative nature, industrial heritage, and supportive community make it a unique place to live and work:

“It comes back to that market town history – It’s the community feel that has been passed down, and we want to keep that going. We all want to see certain things grow and change in a progressive way.”

There are now over 230 Chesterfield Champions that are proud to support the local economy, working closely with Destination Chesterfield to showcase our town as a destination to live, work, visit and invest.

New Chair of Destination Chesterfield announced at town’s largest business conference

Andrew Byrne, Group Property Development Director of The Devonshire Group, has been officially announced as the new Chair of Destination Chesterfield.

Business leaders and key stakeholders from across the town were updated on Andrew’s election to the role at Celebrate Chesterfield 2025.

Held at the Winding Wheel Theatre, the annual conference brought together the local business community to outline the future of Destination Chesterfield’s promotion of the town.

Andrew will lead the strategic direction of the Destination Chesterfield partnership alongside the Destination Chesterfield board and team, guiding the initiative as it continues to raise the profile of the town as a thriving place to live, work, visit and invest.

His appointment to this voluntary position marks a new chapter in the mission to drive investment, support local businesses, and showcase Chesterfield’s unique identity. The post was previously held for more than a decade by Peter Swallow, Managing Director of Bolsterstone PLC.

Speaking to delegates for the first time as Chair, Andrew expressed his enthusiasm for the role: “I am delighted to step into the role as Chair of Destination Chesterfield, and I’m excited to bring my passion for the local area to continue our progress.

“I’m looking forward to working with partners to highlight the new East Midlands Investment Zone, which will bring highly skilled jobs in green industries and advanced manufacturing to the Staveley area.

“We are also evolving into a town to experience – through the revitalisation of our high streets in Chesterfield and Staveley, an extension to Chesterfield Canal, and the ongoing development of the groundbreaking visitor attraction, PEAK Gateway Resort.

“We continue to build quality housing for residents in Chesterfield, including increasing the number of homes around our town centre. My priority, and that of the Destination Chesterfield partnership, is to ensure this continued regeneration benefits residents and bolsters our communities, as we continue to promote Chesterfield as a prime location to live, work, visit and invest.

For 15 years, Destination Chesterfield has played a crucial role in supporting local economic growth and promoting Chesterfield as a contemporary destination.

During his address at Celebrate Chesterfield 2025, Andrew provided an overview of the new Destination Chesterfield plan, which will guide the promotion of Chesterfield until April 2027. This will concentrate on four key areas of activity:

  • A Place to Call Home – Showcasing Chesterfield as an attractive place to live whilst also encouraging further residential development across the borough.
  • Made in Chesterfield – Promoting manufacturing, engineering, and green industries to attract investment and drive growth, while inspiring future generations to pursue rewarding careers in these thriving sectors.
  • Experience Chesterfield – Showcasing the town’s tourism, hospitality, and cultural offerings to attract new businesses to the town centre and high streets, encourage people to spend leisure time locally, and support the visitor economy, while positioning Chesterfield as a gateway to the Peak District National Park.
  • Telling the Chesterfield Story – Strengthening Chesterfield’s brand and reputation through effective storytelling and working alongside the town’s network of Chesterfield Champions to raise the profile of Chesterfield as a contemporary destination. In addition, supporting businesses to grow by signposting support and encouraging innovation.

Celebrate Chesterfield 2025 was sponsored by DogLand, a business which has seen tremendous success and growth since launching in 2017.

At the event, the business’ founder Dawn Brown shared her inspiring story, crediting Chesterfield’s location and vibrant community for her success: “Since setting up my business, the community has embraced my vision, and the continued support has been invaluable. Being based here has allowed our business to grow and flourish, and thanks to this, we now have plans to expand the DogLand ethos to new areas.

“Chesterfield has a strong, collaborative business network that supports growth and innovation, which is why we are proud to support Destination Chesterfield’s successful promotion of the town.”

The event also hosted the annual Celebrate Chesterfield Business Expo, held in partnership with East Midlands Chamber. The expo allows organisations to showcase their products and services, discuss collaborations and create connections across the business community.
