Spectacular ‘Shine a Light’ displays to wow visitors at Hardwick Hall

The National Trust’s Hardwick Hall near Chesterfield will host two nights of stunning after-dark displays for the final instalment of Derbyshire’s Shine A Light spectacular on Friday 17th & Saturday 18th February 2023.

Tickets for the magical events are selling fast as visitors prepare to watch Hardwick’s remarkable history unfold in a breath-taking display of light and sound projected against the dramatic backdrop of Bess of Hardwick’s Elizabethan masterpiece.

The displays will combine cutting-edge projections, moving animations, special effects, and live music to tell the story of the jewel in Bess’s crown. Witness tapestries come to life, landscapes re-form, and buildings rise and fall.

Plus, with live entertainment throughout each evening, and food and drink vendors selling treats from pancakes to Indian street food, Shine A Light promises fun for the whole family.

The displays at Hardwick Hall are the final instalment in a four-part programme of Shine A Light events that began at Cromford Mills in October 2022. The events have since thrilled hundreds of visitors at Elvaston Castle and Barrow Hill Roundhouse.

The displays are unique to each venue and visitors who watch all four chapters – and successfully spot the ‘hidden animal’ at each – have the opportunity to enter a prize draw to win a hamper of local produce.

Delivered by internationally-renowned Derbyshire-born video projection artists Illuminos, Shine A Light is designed to celebrate Derbyshire’s rich history and cultural heritage, boost the visitor economy and extend the tourism season during the traditionally quieter autumn and winter months.

Councillor Barry Lewis, Leader of Derbyshire County Council which commissioned Shine A Light, says: “Our second season of Shine A Light has been even bigger and better and the fourth and final instalment looks set to wow audiences once more.

“What better way to spend an evening than to see our local history and heritage brought to life with a modern-day twist. An event not to be missed!”

Jo Dilley, Managing Director of Visit Peak District & Derbyshire, says: “Shine A Light has already delighted hundreds of people with magical displays that shine the spotlight on Derbyshire’s rich cultural heritage.

“Each venue is unique, with its own story to tell, and not only do these events bring local history to life, they also support the recovery of local visitor economy businesses and offer a fantastic opportunity to enjoy an evening of entertainment with live music, food and drink. Get your tickets whilst you can!”

Shine A Light takes place at Hardwick Hall on 17th & 18th February 2023. Entry is from 17:30, with large-scale projections every 20 minutes throughout each evening. Tickets are £9 for adults and £6 per child (aged 4-16 inclusive, free for 3 and under).

Community group celebrates 10 years of walking at Holmebrook Valley Park

Chesterfield’s Holmebrook Valley Park is celebrating 10 years of hosting a walking group this month.

On 12 January, the volunteer group leaders and other local walkers were joined by Mayor of Chesterfield Councillor Tony Rogers to explore what the park has to offer.

The Holmebrook Valley Park ‘walk with us’ walking group originally launched in 2013, but it was temporarily put on hold in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions, then launched again as soon as outdoor meeting restrictions allowed.

Over the years, the group has welcomed many residents and other local people who enjoy walking. A number of the group’s regular members have completed accredited training enabling them to take it in turns to lead the group each week.

Councillor Jill Mannion-Brunt said: “We have a wonderful team of volunteers at Holmebrook Valley Park who share the role of walk leader each week and help each other to keep the group growing and thriving.

“They meet around 10.15am each week by the café at the pavilion in the top cark park off Watermeadow Lane, ready to set off at 10.30am. They generally walk for around an hour before returning to the café for drinks and chat. Anyone is welcome to join in, no special equipment is needed, just sensible shoes and clothing suitable for the weather.

“There are slopes in the park and some rough surfaces under foot but the leaders will explain the route each week so walkers can decide if it is suitable for their own ability. Everyone is welcome, so if you fancy getting outdoors and exploring somewhere new feel free to join the group.”

Park facilities

The park is open to pedestrians all year round and has won the prestigious Green Flag award for the last twelve years.

The northern end of the park is elevated and offers spectacular views over Chesterfield to Hardwick Hall and Bolsover Castle and on towards Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.

There is something for everyone to enjoy at the park including children’s play areas, a free outdoor gym, football pitches, cycling, orienteering route, an art sculpture trail, picnic tables and a café.

Join the group

The Holmebrook Valley Park walking group meet every Thursday at 10.30am for a

45–60 minute walk in Chesterfield’s largest park that includes open water, woodlands and hay meadows. Please note the park has hills and some uneven paths.

If you would like to join in, meet by the cafe in park pavilion (top car park) at Holmebrook Valley Park, Watermeadow Lane, Chesterfield, S41 8XP.

Trees planted in Staveley in memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Almost 50 trees have been planted at a site in Staveley, in memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Local school children and tree wardens were joined by representatives from Chesterfield Borough Council to plant 48 oak trees on Darley Close at Staveley, as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy Initiative.

The Queen’s Green Canopy is a unique tree planting initiative which was launched to help mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Following the wishes of His Majesty The King, the initiative has now been extended to the end of March 2023 to give people the opportunity to plant trees throughout the planting season, in memoriam to honour Her Majesty.

The newly planted trees will help to create a new woodland in the area – called the Queen’s Copse – that will serve as a local memorial to Queen Elizabeth II.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of the Council; Councillor Amanda Serjeant, Deputy Leader of the Council; and the Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield were all on hand to help plant some of the first trees on the site.

People across the country – from individuals, groups, schools and communities to larger organisations and businesses – can also play their own part by coming together to plant trees – to serve as a lasting tribute to Her Majesty. More information on how to get involved can be found at www.chesterfield.gov.uk/explore-chesterfield/parks-and-green-spaces/queens-green-canopy

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “Trees help enhance our green spaces, create habitats for wildlife and can tackle climate change by absorbing carbon emissions so I’m hoping that as many people from our local communities will join in with The Queen’s Green Canopy and plant trees across the borough.

“This initiative is not only a great way to honour Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her extraordinary service, but it will also help increase biodiversity across our borough.”

Over time the site will be managed in a way that is sensitive to nature and biodiversity and compliments the surrounding housing and open space.

White Rose Beauty Colleges to showcase a range of skills and career opportunities in Chesterfield

Chesterfield’s White Rose Beauty Colleges is reminding people across the town of the range of career opportunities in the sector, by hosting a relaunch event this month.

The business opened in the town back in November 2019, just months before the lockdown. Head of Recruitment, Helen Bradshaw takes up the story on how the business had to quickly adapt to changes brought on by the pandemic:

“We successfully navigated our business through this difficult period by adapting our courses to facilitate online learning but like most businesses we were unable to execute all our plans due to the restrictions in place.

“With lockdown firmly behind us we feel now is a great time to host an open event to showcase who we are, what courses we offer and reach out to those in the community who may still not of heard of us.”

Helen and her colleagues are hopeful that the relaunch event will help to engage the local community and provide people with an insignt into the key learning opportunities they are able to offer.

She commented: “We have an evening of positivity and fun planned, with music and light refreshments, mini treatments such as hand and arm massage or shoulder massage to enjoy, make-up demonstrations and a tour of our college with staff on hand to answer any questions about the importance of our role in the learning and development of others and contribution to our town.  In addition, and our way of saying thank you all attendees will receive a voucher which can be redeemed against a treatment at another time.”

White Rose Beauty Colleges is confident that the business will continue to grow  in Chesterfield  and is dedicated to its commitment and contribution towards the Chesterfield community.

white-rose-beauty-colleges

Helen added: “Recently we became part of The Learning Curve Group and feel excited about the opportunities this will offer in the future.  We will continue to provide an excellent training environment in the heart of Chesterfield where White Rose Beauty Colleges is an accredited centre of excellence offering VTCT and ITEC registered qualifications.  These awarding bodies are recognised worldwide and make us a great choice for those wishing to use their qualification in the professional environment.

“Our college plays an active role in supporting Derbyshire schools by attending their careers events, also we host open days and taster sessions in our college throughout the year. Our excellent two-year Study Programme for school leavers helps prepare the learner for work in the industry by providing a realistic salon environment where members of the public can book treatments.

“We are passionate to introduce the concept of how diverse a career in beauty can be, with excellent links to organisations who we regularly invite as guest speakers to our college.  We have forged good links with local salons and are happy to advertise job opportunities around our college.  We provide the opportunity for NEETS learners who often come to us with challenges and obstacles which we help and support them to overcome.  We literally encourage every learner to believe in themselves and achieve their goals.”

“Our adult learners can choose from a varied and interesting course programme, we find our learners are either looking for a career change or have a job they enjoy but want to learn something creative.  We have strong links with the Job Centre and have attended career events, our Level 2 Diploma courses are fully funded including kit and uniform to anyone who is unemployed to ensure those in need are not denied the chance to join us.

“Most recently we have offered and facilitated courses for a local group of Ukrainian refugees who wished to upskill whilst they are in the UK or simply enjoy the sociability of meeting new friends. We will continue to reach out and support local charities and businesses alike, my belief is we can and do make a difference.”

City Taxis welcomes Chesterfield Royal Hospital Charity as its Chesterfield charity of the year

Having pledged to support a small charity in each of their operating areas, local taxi company City Taxis has announced its latest charity partner for 2023 – the Chesterfield Royal Hospital Charity.

Chesterfield Royal Charity supports both the patients and staff at the hospital, by improving the environment and facilities on offer, all designed to enhance care and wellbeing. Through donations, the charity goes above and beyond to provide more than what is offered through ‘normal NHS funding’, from relaxation gardens and MRI scanners to water stations and mental health support for staff.

The Charity is currently working on its ‘Care for the Carers Appeal’ which is funding a £2m Health and Wellbeing Hub, which is being built on the hospital site. The Hub will offer all staff a safe place to actively look after their mental and physical health and wellbeing. Amongst the hub’s facilities will be a gym, counselling rooms and complimentary therapies.

Sacha Skinner, Marketing Manager at City Taxis, said: “Since finalising our City Charity strategy, we have worked with our Site Managers to select several local charities that we believe could really benefit from our support.

“In summer (2022) we teamed up with Sheffield Hospitals Charity to throw a ‘Thank You NHS Gala Ball’, where all funds were donated to the charity’s ‘We’ve Got You’ Campaign – dedicated to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of NHS staff across Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

“When we learned that Chesterfield Royal Charity were also working on a large project to support the health and wellbeing of their staff, we knew this was something we wanted to get involved with.

“We are very proud to be supporting such a wonderful charity and very much looking forward to getting involved in lots of fundraising activities and volunteering to support this project.”

Ken Godber, Director at Chesterfield Royal Charity, said: “We are extremely proud to welcome City Taxis on board to support for our ‘Care for the Carers’ appeal.

“We know the Health and Wellbeing Hub will make a huge difference to the 4,500 colleagues working at the hospital.

“It’s been a very difficult time for the NHS and with support from City Taxis for the whole of 2023 we think we’ll be able to make even more investments in the Hub.

“Thank you to them and all their drivers for this commitment.”

In 2022, six members of the City Taxis team took on the Redbrik Foundation Chesterfield 10k to help raise funds for the Health and Wellbeing Hub build, which is set to open in spring 2023. Visit the link for more information: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/CarefortheCarersCRH
