Local leaders to consider final proposal for Derbyshire services

District, borough and city councillors are set to formally consider a proposal responding to Government plans for the biggest change to councils in 50 years.

The proposal, developed by eight districts and borough councils along with Derby City Council, recommends reducing the number of local authorities from 10 to two unitary councils. This would mean one for the north and one for the south of Derbyshire.

These new councils would:

  • Stay connected to communities—large enough to deliver, close enough to listen.
  • Offer effective, value-for-money services with financial stability.
  • Preserve Derbyshire’s identity, heritage, and environment.
  • Meet Government criteria for reorganisation, including improved service quality, community engagement, efficiency, and support for devolution.

Shaped by local and national evidence and feedback from over 7,300 residents and organisations, the proposal includes four boundary options. In two, Amber Valley parishes could sit between the two councils.

The proposal includes four variations for the boundary line between the northern and southern authorities. In two of these variations, the parishes currently covered by Amber Valley Borough Council could sit between the two councils.

In a joint statement, the Leaders of Amber Valley, Bolsover, Chesterfield, Derby City, Derbyshire Dales, Erewash, High Peak, North East Derbyshire and South Derbyshire councils, said:

“We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to significantly transform how we deliver the services that local people rely on – creating a brighter future for all who live, work, and invest in Derbyshire.

“The people and places of our historic county are at the heart of our proposal, and our shared vision will see a future where services are simpler, communities feel supported, and every part of our county thrives.

“We will unify Derbyshire’s current patchwork of policy, planning, and funding – paving the way for joined-up decision-making and localised support to better serve local needs.

“As well as better meeting the needs of our diverse communities, by working with our regional partners, including the Mayor of the East Midlands and East Midlands Combined County Authority, the new councils will also be well positioned to attract significant investment in housing, transport, and infrastructure to strengthen Derbyshire’s economy, and provide more opportunities for local people.

“This is a hugely complex issue with a lot to consider. But – above all – we want every Derbyshire resident to share a sense of belonging and opportunity in a vibrant, prosperous county.

“The final proposal must now be formally considered by all nine of the partner councils, before a submission is made to the Government.”

The proposal forecasts:

  • £167m in savings over six years
  • £44m annual savings from year six onward
  • Initial setup costs recouped within 3.5 years

Each of the nine councils will consider the proposal before submitting it to Government by 28 November 2025.

Derbyshire County Council is preparing a separate proposal, but all ten councils have collaborated to ensure accurate data.

The Government will review submissions and decide on reorganisation by summer 2026. Elections for new shadow authorities are expected in 2027, with the new councils launching by April 2028.

If you’re short on time use our quick links below to jump to the section that interests you the most.

1. Get outdoors in our historic town centre

Queens Park autumn

Start your adventure at the iconic Crooked Spire, a must-see landmark. If you have time, book a tour around the church and up the tower for stunning views over the town.

Take a leisurely walk through our vibrant town centre, looking up to enjoy our black-and-white architecture. Wander through the bustling Chesterfield Market, known for its specialist events and local produce. Afterwards, nip into The Shambles and The Yards for hidden shopping gems and local art.

Chesterfield’s historic shopping streets are complemented by a modern, outdoor shopping centre at Vicar Lane. And of course, the indoor Pavements Shopping Centre offers a spot to shelter from the inevitable bursts of rain.

Walk west to West Bars and walk under the Royal Mail office. Before you reach the bridge, spot one of the largest and most impressive public art works locally – Angela Conner’s Poise (Wind Sculpture). Divided into six segments, see if you can see it moving gently back and forward.

Cross over the bridge to Queen’s Park, where you can relax by the pond and watch the world go by, or enjoy a spot of cricket. Meet at the bandstand every other Thursday at 10:30 am to join the MindSpace – Chesterfield Walk and Talk Group.

For those wanting to extend their walk, exit the park towards Chatsworth Road for the suburban charm of independent shops and cafés. Continue for Inkerman Park, Manor Fields, Somersall Park and Walton Dam.

2. Peaceful Holmebrook Valley Park

Take a stroll through over 140 acres of picturesque parkland to feel as though you’re far away from the hustle and bustle, despite only being a ten minute drive from Chesterfield town centre.

A highlight feature, the stunning lake at Holmebrook Valley is a peaceful spot for a circular walk, surrounded by greenery. Take a moment to rest on one of the many benches scattered around the lake while listening to the calming sounds of nature.

Paths at Holmebrook Valley are smooth and well-signposted, although be aware that the toilets and cafe are at the top of the hill.

3. Tranquil Chesterfield Canal

Chesterfield canal

Enjoy a serene walk along the peaceful towpath of the Chesterfield Canal, known as The Cuckoo Way with plenty of wildlife to spot along the way.

The flat route from the Canal Basin at Chesterfield Railway to Staveley is perfect for an easy walk. As well as featuring some of the oldest staircase locks ever built, significant restoration has been carried out along the canal since 1989 including two new marinas.

And the future is exciting, with work in progress to extend the canal by half a mile from Hartington Harbour onto the Staveley Puddlebank, and two miles of multi-use towpath all the way to Renishaw.

Enhance your experience with a delightful cruise on a Tripboat from Hollingwood Hub or Tapton Lock.

At Tapton Lock try Spanish cuisine at Casa Hotel or artisan dishes from The Batch House, opposite the home of Chesterfield FC.

Stop off at Katey’s Coffee Shop when you reach Hollingwood.

While shopping in Staveley, enjoy historic landmarks from Staveley Hall to Mill Green Bridge and the beautiful Chesterfield Canal on the Staveley Walking Trail.

4. Linacre Reservoirs

Escape to the peaceful Linacre Reservoirs, a haven for nature lovers. Surrounded by woodlands and rolling hills, the reservoir offers a network of easy paths ideal for a gentle stroll. Enjoy the serene water views, spot local wildlife, and breathe the fresh country air.

Dogs love to explore and play in the woodland. It’s a five-mile route covering all three shimmering reservoirs and surrounding streams, and there are plenty of side tracks to discover too – if you’re feeling slightly more adventurous.

5. Scenic Monsal Trail

Monsal Trail winter

A picturesque walk through the Peak District, Monsal Trail offers a flat path for gentle walking through a former railway line. Enjoy stunning countryside views, cross impressive viaducts, and explore old railway tunnels.

From Hassop station, the route to the right has the wow factor. Leading you through an old railway tunnel, the path opens onto an old railway bridge overlooking the lush Peak District greenery. It’s a there-and-back route – so you can walk as far as six miles if you have the time or shorten the walk for more relaxed days. And there are toilets and cafes along the way.

6. Breathtaking views from Birchen Edge to Chatsworth

This walk combines panoramic countryside views with a touch of history. Start your journey at Birchen Edge and follow the trail through enchanting woodlands and open moorlands for reflection and relaxation. As you walk, take a moment to admire the Three Ships – three large gritstone rocks etched with the names of famous naval ships.

Your journey ends at the magnificent Chatsworth House with beautiful woodland surrounding the house. Why not stop for a well-deserved tea at the estate café?

7. Explore Hardwick Hall and surrounding woodland

Four walkers in hiking boots walking away from Hardwick Hall in Chesterfield

Explore the surroundings of Hardwick Hall – one of England’s finest Elizabethan houses. Find beautifully landscaped gardens and gentle walking paths that allow you to soak in the grandeur of the hall and its surroundings.

Take your time to explore the woodland trails, although be aware that there are hills to navigate.

Hardwick Hall offers many architectural and artistic delights from Elizabethan tapestries to Forties furnishings. Afterwards, rest in the café with a local treat, or enjoy a picnic with a view of the magnificent house.

8. An adventure along the Five Pits Trail

Discover the Five Pits Trail, a five point five mile path that follows the old railway lines that once served the local coal mines, with informative signposts to learn about the area’s coal mining history along the way.

The trail is flat and well-maintained. As you walk, you pass peaceful woodlands and open fields and plenty of birds and butterflies.

9. Nature haven Poolsbrook Country Park

Poolsbrook Country Park showing lake and park

Another flat route to take at your own pace, this tranquil spot at Poolsbrook Country Park is home to swans, ducks and woodland birds. So, do bring along your binoculars if you enjoy birdwatching.

Take a gentle stroll around the lake. Then pause on one of the benches to soak up the tranquil atmosphere.

If you’re feeling peckish, the park’s café offers refreshments, or bring a picnic to share.

10. Hidden gem Edges and Ales

The Tickled Trout fireplace

A hilly 8.5-mile circular walk with real ale pubs at several points on the route.

If you’re up for the challenge, you can start from either Millthorpe or Linacre Reservoir, and make your way past four pubs along the way: Royal Oak at Millthrope, Tickled Trout at Commonside, Three Merry Lads at Cutthorpe, and The Peacock  at Cutthorpe.

As well as the chance to stop off for a quick drink, this fantastic route also passes multiple cultural heritage sites like Cartledge Hall, Great Brind Wood, and Pratthall. Plus, if you finish at Linacre, you can pop over to Cutthorpe Creamery Farm Shop and grab yourself some fresh milk or milkshake!

1. Innovate and make efficiencies with advice and funding

adrian williamson innovation support

Keen to innovate but unsure where to start? Get in touch for a free one-to-one business review from the Chesterfield Innovation Support Programme, covering next steps, funding advice and workshop recommendations.

If you’ve wanted to update your tech or processes for a while, but held off due to funding, now is the time to apply for growth vouchers through the Derbyshire Accelerator project.  The funding offers up to £2,000 of specialist training or consultancy support in any area where you can demonstrate that new functionality or processes will support growth in your business.

Some examples of where you might benefit include:

  • CRM
  • AI
  • Websites and E-commerce
  • Finance
  • HR & Employment Law
  • Leadership & Management
  • Marketing Strategy and Operations
  • Sales and Social Media

High-performing businesses can also access support and funding for innovation (and talent) through the High Growth Accelerator project. Chesterfield and Derbyshire businesses must have achieved at least 20% annual growth in revenue, employment, or market share over each of the past three years.

Chesterfield Innovation Support Programme is operated by Chesterfield Borough Council with funding from East Midlands Combined County Authority. Accelerator projects are funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and delivered by East Midlands Chamber. Submit your details to be referred to the most appropriate expert for your business.

2. Boost your talent with the latest knowledge about skills

Chesterfield’s Skills Brokerage Service offers free advice to identify workforce development needs. Services include:

  • Assessing training and skills gaps
  • Accessing funding
  • Securing apprenticeship support
  • Developing talent pipelines

Some of the current courses with funding available include digital skills and marketing, management, team leading, English and Maths, green skills, and property and construction.

High-growth businesses can access talent grants to help grow sustainably at scale. Support includes a range of high-growth workshops and forums. To be eligible, Chesterfield and Derbyshire businesses must have achieved at least 20% annual growth in revenue, employment, or market share over each of the past three years.

Submit your details for a referral to the Chesterfield Skills Brokerage Service.

3. Make global trade easier with advice, support and funding

SuperiorWellness;business

The Chamber has launched the East Midlands International Trade Network, with the first local meeting taking place in Clowne in autumn 2025. The chaired forum includes support, advice from industry experts and peers, and opportunities to shape the development and delivery of the Export Accelerator project.

The first forum meeting follows the success of the Export Accelerator project, which launched in the spring and has so far helped almost 230 businesses navigate the complexities of international trade. The project supports initial research, the launch of a product or service to a new overseas market and more.

The Chamber’s latest Quarterly Economic Survey for the East Midlands revealed a 10% drop in overseas sales and 3% in orders,” says Deputy Chief Executire, Diane Beresford, “which really underlines the extent of the challenges when exporting overseas so it’s no surprise that take-up of the Export Accelerator grants and training bursaries has been so high.

“We have some brilliant examples of businesses tapping into consultancy support in areas such as CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) and attending tradeshows as far afield as Japan. If they haven’t already, I’d urge businesses to sign up for the forum meetings in September to find out about the wide range of services to boost their overseas trade.”

Grant funding of up to £8,000 is available for specialist consultancy, overseas trade show visits, salaries and equipment. Along with fully funded workshops and webinars, there is the opportunity to apply for a £2,000 bursary, which can be used to attend one of the Chamber’s International Trade training courses, including its flagship BCC-Accredited International Trade Operations and Procedures qualification.

The Accelerator project is delivered by East Midlands Chamber on behalf of the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA). Submit your details for a referral to a Chamber business adviser.

4. Attend business events and workshops

Chesterfield Champions round-up: celebrating heritage, creativity and community care

This month, Chesterfield Champions showcase the power of collaboration and local pride through their work across heritage, arts, and health. From honouring the legacy of a railway pioneer to leading eco-inspired creativity, these stories highlight our town’s big community spirit.

Eco arts project inspires families

Families can experience hands-on arts activities themed around nature and our climate at this year’s Tapton Lock Festival.

Visitors are also encouraged to bring unwanted recycling materials with them to use in the artworks. That could be plastic bottles, bottle lids, clean yoghurt pots, cans or boxes. Six stations will be available with stamps to collect in a specially designed Eco Passport, including:

  • Climate habits and awareness
  • Reuse and recycling
  • Biodiversity and soil care
  • Sustainable fashion and textile waste
  • Nature through a child’s eyes and ecological storytelling
  • Microplastics and pollution

The project has been co-designed by members of VERBA, the Ukrainian Social Group of Chesterfield, with leadership from artist, VERBA member, and Junction Arts volunteer, Nadia Ishchuk.

“Tapton Lock is all about community and appreciating nature and the outdoors, so this latest project with VERBA is a perfect fit,” said Rachel Pedley, Project Coordinator at Junction Arts. “The Ukrainian community in Chesterfield has come together to help bring these activities to life, using mostly upcycled and recycled materials to share important messages about sustainability in a fun, creative way. We can’t wait to see families enjoying the journey and collecting their passport stamps!”

Nadia Ishchuk, who has played a key role in developing the activities, added: “We are looking forward to turning yesterday’s rubbish into tomorrow’s masterpieces, with the help of Chesterfield’s families at this amazing free event where people can try their hand at lots of creative activities.”

Now in its 13th year, the Tapton Local Festival features live music, poetry, storytelling, boat trips, circus skills, and more. The Festival takes place on Saturday, 6th and Sunday, 7th September.

Bringing George Stephenson’s legacy to life

Chesterfield Museum is teaming up with Holy Trinity Church to celebrate one of the town’s most influential figures – George Stephenson.

On Saturday, 27th September, visitors can meet a George Stephenson re-enactor. He will highlight Stephenson’s impact on engineering and our railway.

The free event marks the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. It aims to deepen public understanding of Stephenson’s role in shaping the modern world. Talks will take place at 11:00am and 3:00pm, with donations supporting local charities.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy at Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “We hope this event helps people connect with the history of the railways and provides a deeper understanding of the important role George Stephenson played in shaping the modern world.”

Holy Trinity Church, which features a stunning stained-glass window commissioned by Stephenson’s son Robert, has recently received National Lottery Heritage Fund support to develop a new visitor facility and host public events celebrating Stephenson’s legacy.

Apprentices refurbish vital community space

Six Chesterfield Borough Council apprentices are leading the refurbishment of the Bonsall Court Community Room in Newbold. The space will soon be home to Community Development Chesterfield.

Working alongside trained operatives and contractors, the apprentices are gaining hands-on experience while delivering key upgrades. This includes new toilets, kitchen facilities, energy-efficient lighting and heating, and a fully insulated roof. Safety improvements include a new fire alarm system and fire doors.

Councillor Jean Innes, cabinet member for housing, said: “We are looking forward to handing over a fully refurbished and modern facility to Community Development Chesterfield so that it can provide activities and initiatives that will support the local community.

“This project is the perfect opportunity for us to show our trust in our apprentices and nurture our local talent.”

Community Development Chesterfield has taken on a three-year lease of the ground-floor community space at Bonsall Court. The organisation will transform the space into a hub for communities to enjoy. Members of the public can share their ideas and help shape the activities offered. Residents can email info@cdchesterfield.com to share their ideas or get further information.

Local nurse honoured for championing perinatal mental health

Michelle Trolley, Community Outreach Nursery Nurse with Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, has been recognised for her outstanding work in promoting perinatal mental health across diverse communities.

Michelle partnered with the Chesterfield Asian Association to organise a vibrant community fun day, encouraging open conversations around mental health for new parents. Her efforts earned her the Delivering Excellence Every Day (DEED) of the Month award from the Trust.

Vikki Ashton Taylor, Deputy Chief Executive at Derbyshire Healthcare, said: “Michelle’s dedication to reaching out and connecting with diverse communities is truly inspiring.”

Michelle added: “It was truly heartwarming to see families from different backgrounds come together and speak so openly about perinatal mental health. It shows how powerful community connection can be.”

Thousands of people have say on future of council services

More than 7,000 people have shared their views in the ‘One Derbyshire, Two Councils’ survey. They commented on options to reduce the number of local councils from ten to two (with one option covering the north and one covering the south).

Derbyshire’s eight borough and district councils, and Derby City Council, launched the six-week consultation to gather as many views as possible from residents, businesses and organisations from across the county.

In a joint statement, the leaders of Amber Valley, Bolsover, Chesterfield, Derby City, Derbyshire Dales, Erewash, High Peak, North East Derbyshire and South Derbyshire councils, said: “Thank you to everyone who has shared their views on our options for the future of local council services in Derbyshire.

“People and places across Derbyshire must come first when we think about the future of the councils that deliver their services, and we felt it important to ask residents, businesses and organisations across the county what they think about the plans.

“It will take us some time to thoroughly review and collate the results over the coming weeks, and people’s views will be used to inform our final proposal and business case for how local government reorganisation should be taken forward in the best interests of Derbyshire’s communities.”

The consultation closed on Sunday, 10th August. Councils will now review the results, alongside a range of other evidence. Both will be used to shape the final proposal, which needs to be submitted to the Government on or before 28 November.

The Government will then consider the proposal alongside any others that are submitted for Derbyshire before making a final decision on which proposal to implement.

Following the current schedule, the Government will hold elections for the new shadow authorities in 2027 and the new councils will begin operating in April 2028.

Landmark rail innovation centre taking shape in Staveley

A cutting-edge rail innovation and training centre rises rapidly in Barrow Hill, marking a major milestone for Staveley’s growth.

The steel frame is now under construction to build the Derbyshire Rail Industry Innovation Vehicle (DRIIVe).

Once complete, the centre will offer a hub for rail sector growth and innovation.

Sited next to the historic Barrow Hill Roundhouse, it includes classrooms, specialist research and development facilities. As well as a digital laboratory and commercial workshop space.

Steel frame Barrow Hill rail innovation centre

Collaborative growth

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and Vice Chair of the Staveley Town Deal Board, said: “It is fantastic to see this project coming together so quickly. DRIIVe will help grow our local economy by providing local people with the skills they need to access great careers in the rail sector and will help cement our borough’s position in the sector by attracting new businesses to the area.

Construction of the rail innovation centre began in early June. Stepnell is delivering the project on behalf of Chesterfield Borough Council.

Tom Sewell, Regional Director at Stepnell, said: “We’re progressing on schedule with the steel frame now taking shape.

“As we move toward the installation of external cladding, we’re actively engaging with the community to ensure alignment with the ambitions of the Staveley Town Deal and Chesterfield Borough Council. We’re committed to delivering meaningful opportunities for local people throughout the build, through targeted local spend and support for employability.”

Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society works in partnership to develop DRIIVe. It will take on day-to-day management once the centre opens. The centre will reinvest all profits into the Roundhouse site, helping preserve and strengthen community engagement.

Bob Burgess, Director and Trustee at Barrow Hill Roundhouse, said: “We’re thrilled with the works on site. This facility will help local people access new opportunities and ensure that we can continue to help people connect with our heritage at the Roundhouse.”

The centre will support a network of specialist training providers, offering rail-related education from Level 2 through to postgraduate research. Furthermore, it will serve as a base for rail supply chain businesses, providing access to cutting-edge innovation and facilities.

Investing in Staveley’s growth

Ivan Fomin, Chair of the Staveley Town Deal Board, said: “It’s exciting to see works on this project and the wider Town Deal progressing. It has taken time to get to this stage. But hopefully people are now seeing the projects coming out of the ground and will be able to benefit.”

The Staveley Town Deal has provided the majority of funding for the project. It secured £25.2 million from the Government’s Towns Fund. In addition, funding has been provided by Chesterfield Borough Council, the East Midlands Combined County Authority, and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

DRIIVe is a first step in the development of the nearby Hartington-Staveley East Midlands Investment Zone site.

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward said: “DRIIVe is a powerful example of how we’re turning ambition into action with the East Midlands Investment Zone. By investing in skills and innovation, we’re building the foundations of a smarter and greener economy while making sure that local people are at the heart of our journey. The East Midlands is stepping up as a leader in clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable transport – and DRIIVe is proof of that progress in motion.”

Chesterfield businesses unlock over £170k in funding to upskill their workforce

Chesterfield businesses have accessed more than £170,000 in government funding through the Adult Apprenticeship Levy Transfer, helping them invest in their teams with little or no cost to their organisation[1].

The funding, which was part of a wider allocation secured by Derbyshire County Council during the 2024/25 financial year, has enabled 104 adult apprenticeships across the county, supporting workforce development in 41 local businesses.

In Chesterfield alone, 11 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have benefited from £170,426 in levy transfer support, including organisations from healthcare, childcare, engineering and social care.

More information about apprenticeship funding in Chesterfield is available at https://www.chesterfield.co.uk/apprenticeships/hiring-an-apprentice/apprenticeship-funding-opportunities/

Sheepbridge-based manufacturer, Graphoidal Developments, which specialises in lubricating and coating solutions for the glass container industry, was just one of the 11 to benefit. The funding supported both a level five operations manager and a level six product design and development engineer.

“Accessing the Apprenticeship Levy Transfer funding has been a game-changer for our business,” said Carl Singleton, Operations Director at Graphoidal Developments. “It enabled us to upskill without the financial burden.”

“Working with the Chesterfield Skills Brokerage Service made the process straightforward, too. They guided us through every step and helped us find the right training provider. We’d encourage other local businesses to explore what support is available.”

The Chesterfield Skills Brokerage Service, funded by Chesterfield Borough Council, provides free, impartial advice to local employers looking to invest in training and skills development. It can help businesses identify training needs, access funding streams such as the Levy Transfer, connect with local training providers, and offer support with inclusive recruitment, all at no cost.

Diane Beresford, Chair of the Chesterfield Skills and Employment Partnership and Deputy CEO of East Midlands Chamber of Commerce, said: “We are pleased to see businesses taking advantage of funding opportunities to upskill their workforce and drive growth, and we hope that more will do so over the next financial year. With expert support available through the Chesterfield Skills Brokerage Service, there’s never been a better time for businesses to take that next step.”

A dedicated skills website is available for businesses to access via Destination Chesterfield, the town’s place marketing partnership, which works with partners to boost investment and has engaged with over 500 companies over the past two years.

Andy Byrne, Chair of Destination Chesterfield, said: “Employers upskilling their teams and strengthening their organisations is vital to the long-term growth of our town. Initiatives like this, combined with expert guidance from the Chesterfield Skills Brokerage Service, are key to building a resilient, future-ready workforce that helps Chesterfield compete in an increasingly competitive market. I urge businesses to access business and skills opportunities now.”

Chesterfield businesses of all sizes can access skills advice by emailing: info@chesterfield.co.uk or visiting www.chesterfield.co.uk/business/business-support/skills/

[1] The Adult Apprenticeship Levy allows businesses to access 95 – 100% of the costs of apprenticeship training (up to the funding band maximum).

Peak District ‘Car-free Adventures’ campaign wins top award

Car-free Adventures‘ – a marketing campaign created by Visit Peak District & Derbyshire – has won Gold at the prestigious Travel Marketing Awards 2024.

The campaign won the Marketing Responsible and Sustainable Travel award, which recognises organisations that have successfully promoted a more responsible and sustainable way to travel and genuinely made a positive impact on the planet.

Visit Peak District & Derbyshire’s Car-free Adventures campaign ran throughout 2023 and encouraged visitors to choose greener transport options when travelling to, and getting around, the destination to help reduce congestion and protect local landscapes.

Developed in consultation with partners including the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) team at Derbyshire County Council and public transport operators Stagecoach and Northern, the campaign aimed to get more visitors out of their cars and onto public transport by promoting the area’s great bus and rail links.

It showcased new and extended bus services – including Stagecoach’s hop on, hop off open-top Peak Sightseer bus – and highlighted using public transport as a practical way for visitors to save money and reduce their carbon footprint, showing them how they can make their journeys part of the holiday experience.

The Peak Sightseer open-top bus can be picked up from Chesterfield Rail Station at the start and end of each day.

The blue route serves Baslow, Calver, Grindleford, the National Trust Longshaw Estate, Surprise View, Hathersage, Bamford, Hope, Castleton and the spectacular Winnat’s Pass to Blue John Cavern. Whilst the red route links Pilsley, Hassop Station (for the Monsal Trail), Bakewell and the village of Ashford-in-the-Water.

The campaign included the development of leaflets promoting days out by bus, downloadable ‘car-free’ itineraries encouraging sustainable travel, and social media content including video reels showcasing greener days out that have so far reached over three million people.

Jo Dilley, Managing Director of Visit Peak District & Derbyshire, said: “We’re delighted to have received this prestigious award which recognises our ongoing commitment to growing and developing the area’s sustainable tourism offer.

“Working with our valued partners we are committed to reducing car journeys and supporting and promoting a greener way of getting to and around the Peak District and Derbyshire – protecting our precious landscapes and supporting local communities at the same time.

“Sustainable tourism plays a vital in role in growing our visitor economy and ensuring its long-term success, making a real difference to both visitors and residents alike, and we’re thrilled this campaign has not only achieved brilliant results, but also worthy recognition on a national level.”

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways Assets and Transport, Councillor Charlotte Cupit, said: “The campaign that Visit Peak District & Derbyshire devised last year was a fantastic way to promote both our wonderful county, and the public transport options that we have available so we can all enjoy it.

“We were pleased to support this campaign through our Bus Service Improvement Plan and I’m delighted that the team were successful and won this prestigious award, and look forward to working with them on future campaigns to promote bus travel to our visitors.”

Their passion, insight and excellent marketing support helped us to launch our first successful open-top bus in the region as well as seeing other key tourist routes grow from strength to strength.

“Their exceptional tourist videos, social media posts and media support helped us to reach a much larger audience than we expected encouraging more people to enjoy the Peak District in a more sustainable way. The team absolutely deserve this recognition for all of their hard work and dedication.”

Best Bar None Awards Ceremony 2024

Supported by the Home Office and drinks industry, the Best Bar None scheme was launched last summer by Chesterfield Borough Council, in partnership with Best Bar None, Chesterfield Pubwatch and Derbyshire Constabulary.

The scheme is designed to build positive relationships between the licensed trade, police and local authorities, and champions improvements to the management of venues, encouraging best practices to be shared.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “We are pleased to have rolled out the Best Bar None scheme in Chesterfield and it is great to see so many businesses receive their accreditations.

“Chesterfield is a very safe place to live, socialise and visit, and we hope that the introduction of this scheme will help people to feel confident that they can enjoy a night out safely.”

Roger Butler, the Chair of Chesterfield Pubwatch, said: “Chesterfield has many great pubs, restaurants, bars and clubs. It is a great place to enjoy an evening out.

“It’s also a very safe place to socialise. However, like towns and cities around the country, alcohol-related crime and disorder can sometimes be an issue.

“We want to ensure Chesterfield is even safer, and even more welcoming at night, and we’re really pleased that a huge number of businesses have been awarded the Best Bar None accreditation.”

Businesses can sign up for the Best Bar None scheme by contacting the council’s licensing team at licensing@chesterfield.gov.uk or by calling 01246 345230.

Expansion of the scheme into other areas of the town has been proposed throughout 2024 and 2025, to help improve night-time safety across all local communities. Learn more about the Best Bar None scheme on the Chesterfield Borough Council website.
